Hello I live in Tasmania Australia and I have a couple of budgies. One of them has an issue with her skin. She continually itches and her skin is exposed under the wings and on the back underneath her outer feathers. I took her to the vet and was diagnosed with scaly face mite because she had a crusty lump on her beak so I got her treated for that and that problem was fixed but I’m pretty sure that isn’t the issue causing the itching problem. I spray her with mite and lice spray but nothing seems to work. Is someone able to contact me on my personal email address so I can send a photo of the budgie and the condition of her skin. Maybe someone out there will know what the problem is before I reapproach a vet. My email address is mark.dowsen@yahoo.com.au

Mite and lice sprays that you buy from pet stores are useless, worse they can sometimes cause more problems than they were ever meant to solve, so save your money and don't spray again. What does the skin look like? Is it red and inflamed or simply missing some feathers? It is possible that she might have some sort of skin allergy - birds do get them - or it could be a deficiency in her diet, possibly a skin infection. And was the vet an avian vet? Are your birds inside or outside? Jane's instructions for uploading photos should work for you whether using your phone or straight from your computer. The photos will show up as a small image but we can enlarge them to view quite easily simply by clicking on the image.
