Hi there, i recently lost my pet male budgie, one day i noticed he had poop around his vent, i was not worried because he was a dirty boy, he didn't like to bath like our female does, then three days later he had yellow runny poop, then he sat down and i knew he was ill because he never sits down, then he was airing his wings and being sick or regurgitating, then he died. Now my female has got poop at her vent and im extremely worried, can anyone help with diagnosis or what type of medicine/anti-biotics i can give her, ............................................ i can't afford a vet right now and for those who will say ‘’you shouldn't have a pet if you can't afford one” (like they have done on other forums, let me explain, twelve weeks ago we were flooded from above and lost %95 of our belongings, we had to stay in a hotel for 6 weeks and on family floors for three weeks, we incurred thousands of pounds in receipts for living costs in the hotel, which we thought the home insurance would cover, however the women was subletting and did not tell the council or her insurance company, normally the council would have covered our losses and chased the women but this was not a normal situation, so we have not had the money to cover our bird insurance, I've lost my van because i could not afford it due to a living cost rocketing up in the hotel, I've lost my job as a courier and we are using a solicitor to try and claim our money back. We as a family have lost everything but we can't loose Gekko too, so i need to do this on the cheap, if you have any information that could help my bird, i would be so grateful.

To be honest, I think only a vet can help. If you are in the UK, you can take her to the PDSA which is there for just such situations. I hope you get sorted.

Hang on there, someone will be along with some advise for you . In the meantime all you can do is keep him/ her warm and I would partly keep the cage covered and quiet. It’s very obvious you love your pet very much.......nobody on here will judge you . Hang on in there.

I’m so sorry for your horrible situation. One thing re the flooding, I understood, perhaps wrongly that you could claim on your own insurance for damage caused. Apologies if that is also the council insurance etc so you can’t. However I think that aspect has to be challenged. No matter what went on upstairs, it’s not your fault.
I hope Gekko gets sorted

Hi and welcome steweeAm so sorry to hear what you've been through and will try to help your little boy if we can Where abouts in the UK are you? Has it been particularly warm where you are? Reason is budgies can get constipated in this weather so need something like a bit of lettuce or celery to help with their digestion because of dehydration. As for your other bird it doesn't sound like it was related to this birds illness problem because of the colour of it's droppings. Usually yellow droppings means a liver problem. How is your bird behaving, is she singing eating and drinking normally? Is she acting lethargic and fluffed up? As much info you can give will help us try and help you but of course we must advise that we are not avian vets here. Also if you can afford to purchase some Guardian Angel for her water that would help with settling her tum. Let us know x

Could you also post some photos of your budgie if possible. It's hard to hazard a guess at what might help from just having poop stuck to her vent. Could literally be anything.
I'm so sorry to hear of your situation, it sounds like a total nightmare.

A big problem treating birds, so many symptoms fit so many ailments. That's the reason avian medicine is so specialized. Did you get your other bird to a vet? If so what meds did they give you? Giving antibiotics without knowing why can lead to more problems than it may solve, unfortunately. I would definitely get hold of some Guardian Angel, if you can. It is considered to be the best for helping sick birds. Keep Gekko confined and warm, she will use up a lot of energy keeping her body temp up to where it normal would be. Their core body temp runs a lot higher than ours, up around the 41-42 oC mark. Make sure she is eating and drinking. Feed her drops of GA water if she isn't and hang a sprig of millet in her hospital cage - they seem to find this easier to digest when ill. You can also soak some of her normal seed overnight and give this to her - this also makes it easier for a sick bird to eat, apparently. A heat lamp or heating pad and a blanket over her cage to keep the heat in work well.

Can you handle your bird? If so maybe you could bathe her vent with a little water and cotton wool and maybe apply a little vaseline which may help. Can you tell if she is drinking?

Thank you for your kind words, i got her to a specialist avian vet, it wasn't as much as a thought £101, we have not got much as family at the moment but no matter what happens we can't loose Gekko, they did a faecal microscopy and found nothing, however they have prescribed antibiotics in case of a bacterial infection, thanks for your help it is very much appreciated.

Gekko seems her normal self, Gekko is eating as normal, she's got energy and is actually louder than normal too, she's not drinking as much because she normally drunk her water from Baby's cage, so we have been giving her lettuce dunked in water and she loves it, the main negative symptoms are poop around her bum area and or hanging out the bum like its half in half out..her and baby were very close and spent about twelve hours per day flying around the flat but we kept them in separate cages at because she didn't like sharing her cage, thats her place lol. also I will look up Guardian Angel right away...thanks a million.

Totally get what you are saying and how the council are wriggling our. But you cannot be left in this situation or penalised because another neighbour did the wrong thing. Every flat is individual. I suggest you try citizens advice. They are very helpful and will advise on the phone. Also google ombudsmen for landlords and/or council. They have to pay out for your flat. Otherwise loads and loads of people would be in the same situ. They have a duty.
