Brand New Budgie

Recently I adopted a budgie from someone who had been neglecting it for years. The cage seemed to not have been cleaned in ages. I honestly thaught the droppings were mold or somehing when I first saw it due to how much there were. He used to have a partner who died some time ago. Ontop of all this the former owner's cats had been constantly harassing it. He seemes traumatized, and screams each time I put the hand into the cage for cleaning. We have been able to clean the cage by disattaching and cleaning eatch part separatly. As things look now he is somewhat calm as long as I refrain form sticking my hand into his cage.
Some tips on how to approach taking care of him would be greatly appreciated. Also is there a way to make him quiet down? He has learnt to mimick magpies, and if you have ever heard the european magpie you know that this little budgie can be an absolute headache.
Some additional info I have some experiance with birds. I curently own a canary, and owned a cockatiel many years ago. I am hoping he will learn by will observe my interaction with my canary who is quite tame and loves to roam freely in the room or just perch(and poop) on my head or shoulders. I am also planing to to visit the vet when he has settled abit.
Honestly I did not want this bird but I feel like I can't just leave him without a good home. I know someone who might want him but I am not comfortable letting anybody else take care of him in fear of them not giving him the home he desrves.

Thank you for giving this poor neglected budgie a home.
I'm afraid that quietening him down might be a forlorn hope, but you can always play some budgies from youtube in the hope that he may learn a new, more pleasing song! (perhaps he may copy your canary)
Try some wet basil or dill in his cage and he may enjoy a "bath".
What seed are you using?
Can you share a couple of photos?

I'm glad he's found a home where he will be looked after and loved. Would also like to see some pictures.
Welcome to the forum.

Budgies can be loud. Well done for giving him a new home, and perhaps he will quieten down as he gets more used to his surroundings. Is he at all cage aggressive, or just plain scared?? Noting your interaction with your canary should give him some reassurance, for sure. Remember to go through the old winking, blinking, not staring at him, talking quietly and just spending time hanging out close by. If you find he has a favourite food, offer him bits through the bars of the cage to start with until he starts to warm up to you. Given what he has put up with his previous life, he may always be rather flighty, but hopefully will learn to feel safe in the long run.

Thanks for the nice words. The previous owner gave me two packages of different food. One of them does not state the content, just that it's for budgies. The other is supposed to be some kind of supplementary food(The literal translation of the package would be: completion food) with added vitamins and minerals, made out of canary seeds, sunflower seeds, white and red millet, hemp, some other seeds, eggs and vegtables. I do hang around and speak softly to him. I will preatty much use the same techniques I used to help my canary settle in. No he is not cage aggressive. He just seems to panic when I put my hand in. He screams and flies around the cage in a "panic-ish" way. I preatty much leave him be at that point. Yesterday my canary landed ontop of his cage and he had that same panic, but today my canary have been landing on his cage a few times when I was trying to take the picture and he is preatty calm about it. He even looked curious. Here are a few pics: Here is his new buddy teaching him that humans can be alright, sometimes.

Looks like a boy to me jellybean. I'd get some seed bowls and a water bowl that hooks on higher up. Also (I'm sure that you know this) some plants can be poisonous to birds if they eat them, not sure if yours are or not.

Now that you've enlarged the picture, I can see it's a boy. I was looking at it on my phone and the cere looked brownish, π

I used to scream at family members when they put plants close to the canary cage and here I am putting the budgie near all those plants. Ty for the reminder. My canary loves to be out in the balcony to get some daylight. I decided to bring the budgie aswell, and a few minutes later they were both at the edge of their cage chatting like crazy. He went silent though when I approached. I just had to share the pic.

"From little things big things grow". I think your canary is going to win over this this little guy for you. Trusting a human is very different from trusting another (small) bird, but you will know patience is the key. A lovely little fellow, for sure. If you have a good quality finch/canary seed mix, the two birds can eat the same, especially if you are not sure how fresh the seed you were given might be.
