Please find attached photo. My birds are getting black blisters/sacks on their heads and then die within days. This happened last year around the same time in the year. There were hornets in the garden and thought they were the problem. This year it has happened again but no signs of hornets.I have kept birds for 40 years without a problem but now this is wiping out my aviary.have tried vets , but none can help

I am so sorry about your birds. I am definitely no expert but the first thing I thought when I looked at your picture was that it was a tick.....but that doesn’t make much sense does it.... Let’s see what other members think.....

The more I enlarge the picture the more it looks like a tick, can your birds get anywhere near tall grass or anywhere they might pick ticks up from? I might be totally wrong, but take a look at pics of ticks on internet and you will see what I mean.....A tick could easily kill a budgie.

Whereabouts are you based? It might be worth emailing RSPB and avian vets as general vets may not have the experience with birds so wouldn’t necessarily know.

Hello and welcome. I am sorry this is happening to you. Can you remove the black thing to see what it is? How long do they have the black thing before they die. I agree it certainly does look like a tick. Hezz Marianne Marlow samwiseg any ideas?

Wharnsby.......if you try to remove the spot/ tick.....whatever it is.....you must use a proper tick remover ( vets sell them). Because if it is a tick you need to remove the whole thing.

Good article Hezz. Seems to be the likely cause then. At least a solution can be found now. I’m just surprised vets didn’t recognise ticks.

More dead birds this morning, managed to remove a lump from a dead bird, you were all right ,they are ticks I am sorry for you, where are you located. Is your aviary close to hedges/trees? At least you know what you are facing now and can take measures to help prevent them. Fantastic article from Hezz, you should be able to take some advice from it to help your remaining birds. Good luck. Please let us know how you get on.

Oh dear I am so sorry........Now you know it’s ticks, can you stop it happening? I assume they are in an Avery .....So is it close to long grasses or similar? The ticks are obviously close to the birds and can jump., so if you can clear the area next to them it should solve the problem. Also be careful to check yourself carefully. How did you remove the ticks? Because if you don’t get the whole tick out, it can still kill the bird...
