I am ashamed to say that I was 'scammed' the other day. However, fortunately I came to my senses part way through and nothing untoward actually happened. I will relate the story.
I was telephoned on the landline to hear a BT RECORDED MESSAGE saying that my internet connection was going to be terminated because of illegal activity and if I wanted to do something about it 'PRESS 1.
Needless to say I went into panic mode and pressed 1.
Then for one and a half hours I was kept on the phone by various, and I will politely call them, foreign gentlemen, trying to sort out my lap-top. They got me to log-in to TEAM VIEWER and NEW DESK and took control of my lap-top. Stupidly I logged into my BANK ACCOUNT for them and that is when I came to my senses. I logged out of the bank account, shut down all the pages they had called up and then I hung up the phone.
I got onto the internet and searched BT Scam and this has been done, so many times before. Fortunately, because I realised what was happening I was able to get advice from the people that had been scammed: Logged out. Turned off the wireless router to reset the IP address. Phoned the bank Fraud department and got all my cards/accounts put on hold. Contacted a computer chap we use and he came out very next day to clean the laptop.
He found nothing serious, but cleared the Team Viewer and New Desk thingies, they were there but not running! There was a couple of other things he deleted and re-installed, items that were put on round the time of the incident.
So, having no money in my purse and a stop on my debit and credit cards, plus it was the end of the week and my food shopping day, I was up the swannie without a paddle. The computer guy was very understanding and said he would wait for my payment for his services. Thankfully my daughter was able to sub me too!! Bank has re-issued cards and sent them out really quickly. IT CAN BE SOOO INCONVENIENT plus having to pay to get the lap-top sorted.
So this is a warning to you computer guys that these things are happening all the time and to beware!
I never thought I would be caught, but there you are!
I might add also, the very next day I was phoned by someone saying they were from BT, and how was I today?
You can guess the rest!!!
So you lovely forum people be VERY AWARE of whom you are talking to on the phone!!!
