I am posting this thread to see if I can help others if their birds are unfortunate enough to get the same thing I think Marley has.
Its about Avian Gastric Yeast or Megabacteria.
I will try and keep this brief, but it is a story of how things came to pass.
A couple of months back, Marley was showing signs of being a bit poorly, but it wouldn't amount to much he was eating a drinking normally and then he would be fine.
He would then have bouts of sickness (always overnight), and when I say sick he was throwing seed everywhere so it would end up on the inside of the covers showing a gloop with undigested seed in it.
I think the reason that this hadn't fully manifested itself was due to the fact the boys have ACV in their water daily (albeit a small amount).
Long story short, I stopped anything sugary like sweetcorn and sugar snap peas as this seemed it was making things worse when he ate these things and upped the ACV. And because a family member has had oral thrush, I was aware that they were not to have anything sugary as it would feed the yeast and make it worse. And as I was weighing him every weeks I was aware he was gong light.
So I therefore went off with Marley to the Exotic Vets in Dover.
I tried to tell the vet what I thought it was and she said that she would give him some meds but would need a test to be done first to ascertain what it was. £170 lighter and after coming home I was actually lucky to get a sample as Marley managed to vomit on me (I know gross) and it STANK, a very sour smell which convinced me it was AGY. But the vet had given me Metronidazole IN SUGAR SYRUP?! So had to stop the meds immediately!
As that wasn't working she then prescribed Tylosin as the vomit test came back with only a bacteria being present. I asked her if she could prescribe Amphotericin B to treat the AGY and she said they did not have any in stock and she could'nt get it in as it was too expensive.
I was devestated.
So eventually, I thought I would try and get an appointment with the head vet there to have Marley put to sleep if they couldn't help him as I was not prepared to watch him suffer.
And unbeliavably, the vet said he would have to order in the Amphotericin B and should be there in a couple of days?!!! But in the meantime, gave him Metroidazole without the sugar syrup to treat him in case it was trichomoniasis.
We have now finished the tricho meds (which hasn't made any differnce at all) and am giving him the AGY meds for 10 days and hoping upon hope that this sorts him out.
I just wanted to say that Amphotericin B CAN BE SOURCED if you vet can be bothered. And as for it being more expensive? Metronidazole was £22 for 7 days and Amphotericin B was £11 for 10 days.
If your vet would contact Burnham House Veterinary Surgery in Dover 01304 206 989 they would find out where they could get their supply of Amphotericin B from. This was something else the vets tried to do was call round other vets in the area to see if they had any in stock.
Suppose the moral of this story is, there is no one who knows your birds better than you do.
And I hope that none of you experience this and if sadly you do - are able to get something from my experience to help them.
