I've just been outside listening to the most awful, distressing squeal. I was letting one of the dogs go for a pee I. The back garden, it was 5am. Of course out comes a torch and I go investigate. Turns out to be a hedgehog next door.
I've been out these in my pj's, in the rain, for over half an hour down the fence by the side of the house. Trying to see if it was OK as there was a drain with no cover and I thought maybe it had fell down.
Eventually I saw it run through a gap in the side gate and into the front so I got some dog food and A bowl of water and put it out the front.
It's now 5.30am. I think I must be a crazy woman. I'm sure I never use to be this insane!!!!!

You're not insane clt80, you're kind hearted. I hope the little hedgehog had a feed and got away safely.

Did similar a few weeks ago. We are in a bungalow with daughter in front bedroom, Got me out of bed as we didn't know what the noise was and found 2 of them arguing. Appreciate the kindness in the feeding but please be careful it may become a rat magnet. My neighbours at the back put the dog food out and I have had furry visitors camping 3 times.

We have visiting hedgehogs every night and watch them feed. We even have a hedgehog house for them. Now is the time to put food out to build them up for their winter hibernation, but I agree it can be a problem if they don’t eat it all.....other animals and rodents can take a fancy to it..... We usually put it out at about 10 o’clock and the oggies are usually waiting for us......

Not insane, clt80, regardless of what your family may tell you. Don't believe them.

Sorry Steve I've gone and bought a can of dog food (my dogs eat kibble)! Couldn't help it I feel sorry for them! Hid it in front garden behind plants. I know what you are saying though about rats.
Sam, there was just the one lol. I'd googled and it said hunger or injury/fighting. There was one lurking about last year which never made a sound.

Ladybird, I fancy a hedgehog house. I don't want anything in the back garden as my dogs would be all over it and it's not fair on the hedgehog. But, I do have a front garden, not sure it's sheltered enough or if it could be hid once all the plants die back, would be exposed to cats I suppose? Is yours hidden?

It’s in the border with a wall behind it and a few bushes at either side. We have put stones around it and some on the top.....hay inside.......It was only a cheap one the basket type, but they use it.

Hhm, I don't think I have anywhere safe to put it in the front. I need some evergreens to hide it in.

My mum and dad had a hedgehog house and used to love feeding them but they too found other furry creatures (rats) eating their food. Now they just leave shelter and water.

It is an unfortunate thing that other creatures can also eat the hedgehog food, just the same as feeding the birds, that also gets unwelcome visitors. We put the hedgehog out at the same time every night and find they are usually waiting nearby to come and get it . Some years ago when I was fitter, I used to take the food out and sit on the grass and they would come really close to feed, bringing their babies with them....that was very special.

That's amazing ladybird.
This morning, after the sun was up I heard the squeal. Spoke to neighbours and they said they have a resident hedgehog that has made itself a mound in their back garden. So it's put my mind at rest. The hedgehog is lucky, my neighbours have the best garden in the entire neighbourhood! It's like something off of TV with lots of hidey holes for wildlife.

You do know why hedgehogs squeal when mating don't you. It is rather a prickly afair.
