Hello, my sweet boy has a strange uplifted scale on the bottom of his foot. It's red and irritated, and he favors that foot so I know it's really bothering him (even though he tries to hide it). Unfortunately our vet aappointment isn't until next Saturday. What can I do to alleviate his discomfort and keep if from getting infected? It's been getting a little worse since I took the photo. Please help, thank you! Unfortunately I don't know how to add a photo

budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/thread/17937/uploading-photos-2Sounds a lot like bumblefoot from your description. What type of perches does your budgie have? The correct perches can prevent these sores from occuring in the first place - natural branches from bird-safe trees/shrubs; no sandpaper, plastic or smooth pine dowels. In the meantime you can try wrapping the perches in something such as vet-wrap to give a little padding for the feet. Bathing the foot in a warm epsom salts bath and applying a small dab of Savlon can help give some relief. Your vet will probably give you something to relieve any pain as well as an antibiotic to prevent any infection, depending on the degree of the problem. While this is from a chicken site, the categories are the same for all birds: www.poultrydvm.com/condition/bumblefoot
