Bonnie started showing signs of a personality change and then we noticed the colour of her poop go to lime green. We took her to the vet (an avian vet) and he gave her a broad spectrum antibiotic orally and gave us a second dose to give her in two days. We administered this although we did struggle a bit. Rather than just pick up the next two doses as suggested if we'd coped, we opted to go to him to administer her next dose to make sure she got it ok and pick up the last to do ourselves. When he'd given her the medicine, she started a rattly wheezing, like it'd got in her lungs. I've got home from work today and can here her squeaking quietly when she breathes and shes bobbing her tail. We talked to then vet on the phone and he said if we could get her there before closing time he'd see her. We tried to catch her (she's friendly, but doesn't like being caught or held), it stressed her out and she squeaked more. We called back and said we'd leave her for tonight so as not to stress her out any more. Her poop has gone back to its normal colour and before her last dose of medicine she was showing signs of improvement and being chirpier. Now she's sitting with her head slightly elevated or going to sleep and squeaking. He said if she'd had some medicine get into her airway, it "should" be absorbed, but it depends on how she copes with this. Has anyone else experienced this or has that last dose of medicine finished her off? Seriously worried.

It does sound as though the vet didn't do the best job administering the AB's. I would definitely get her back to determine if this really is what happened and possibly get some advice on how to help her. Fluid in the airways is not good for anyone, and could possibly turn into a respiratory infection. A steamy bathroom for 10-15 minutes might help her breathe more easily, as it can help open up the respiratory passages.

He seemed to be saying that if it was in the airways, it's just a case of see how she copes with it. Yesterday he said if it was on her lungs, it'd get absorbed. I'd actually just turned the lights off and gone upstairs so she could go to sleep, but I'm just running a bath now to give it a try, so I don't regret not giving it a go in the morning if the worst happens.

Still with us this morning and made a nice greeting, came straight out the cage for a bit of preening and nose rubbing. Still rattling and squeaky with mouth open, but quite active. But after I left for work she's been sick just once. Son spoke to vet who said to give her her final dose.

Fingers crossed for you and Bonnie. Sick birds are such a worry. Sadly Hezz, poor Bonnie gave up on us last night. She had a kind of fit and flopped of me and on to the floor by the side of the sofa, we picked her up and put her in the cage and shut the door and could see was very hot, so put the fan on for her. She than went off for something to eat! We went to bed about 9.30, but I got up at midnight and little Bonnie was no more. Absolutely devastated.

I am so sorry that Bonnie has passed away. It does sound to me as though there was more of a health issue than a badly administered drug dose, I'm sorry. At least it sounds like she went quickly and is no longer having to struggle. Rest in peace, little Bonnie. xx
