My Dad is away for a week and as is normal I am parrot sitting. His name is Freddy and he is a green amazon. He is very noisy. He does talk too, lots. I hate that I can't have him out, as he is in his smaller cage, but he is a little unpredictable and sometimes bites. He likes to eat all the wrong things (my Dads fault) I don't pander to that though and have made him up some bags of fruit and veg. Here he is eating a bit of spinach. Eric is fine with him being here but I will not let him out without me being stood there as I don't know what would happen should Eric land on the top of Freddy's cage.

Holy moly helenmat, he's a big birdie. When he is "let out" what does that mean with a bird this size, does he fly, it would need to be a large room for this big guy to stretch his wings.

Oh, hello, Freddy! Aren't you a handsome fellow?? But looking a tad p*##ed off at being confined to such a small cage. The indignity of it all!

If Eric landed on Freddie's then Eric would not land anywhere again. I guess he would have no feet to land on.

He is a bit of a handful yes. My dad has him out every day but he is not out as much as he should be (don't get me started ) He doesn't really fly, more hops about. He will be really nice and take apples from you and say 'Ta' but then the next time he will attack your fingers!!. He would certainly be capable of biting off Erics' feet, he has broke a button clean off my Mums cardigan and I have seen him bite chunks off a brush stale, and open walnuts, he has also taken a chunk off my mums dining chair! When he is in a good mood he will let you scritch his neck but only on his terms, and he has been known to turn on you half way through. He says all sorts, 'Bye bye, Hello, Ta, Good morning, What you doing, Wheres Holly, Right said Fred, lets have a cup of tea then, Freddies a good bird, Freddie parrot and lots more. When he screeches though it physically hurts your ears! I really don't mind admitting I am a little bit intimidated by him. He will surely bite my Dad when he comes back for him, he always does, even though he is really pleased to see him and gets very excited. We have him for a week.

Perhaps the biting is frustration at not being let out enough (sorry, not having a go, but you already said you don't think he's let out enough helenmat)

He is just lacking stimulation generally. I believe if you have a bird like this you have to devote so much time to them. If he was mine he would only be in a cage at night or when I wasn't in. I would get one of those big parrot stands with the big bowl at the bottom. But then I wouldn't commit to having such a creature. He is around 22 years old. Having said that my Dad can do almost anything with him. He takes him in the shower and he has breakfast with him every morning. He just isn't very socialised with other people. He has just said his funniest thing though. When anything falls to the floor he says 'Oops, dropped it'. I was waving at him here which is why he kept saying bye bye.

He is gorgeous, helenmat, even though you are right to be wary. Pity you only have him for a week or you could try a few different things to keep his beak and mind busy. Is he much of a screecher? Loki is bad enough in an open aired house, so I could imagine what Freddy might be like in a more enclosed environment, being a much bigger bird.
