Why not think about getting him a budgie friend? A quaker and Eric wouldn't be able to be out together unless under supervision. I know you haven't had the best run of luck with your budgies, but another might just be the tonic that Eric needs. We have thought about doing that too. I just don't know if I can continue the spiral of having two, one dies, upset all over again. We did say that we would have no more as the emotions can't stand any more tragedy but I really know what you mean about it being probably good for Eric. But surely I would definitely loose all interaction then. Unless of course I tame the new bird well before putting them together, would a new tame interacting bird show Eric the ropes and bring him out of his shell, so many thoughts running through my head....

I know exactly what you mean helenmat, I was in the same position. I've just bought a youngster, and Ben is 6 in January, but I saw how miserable he was after Max died and it broke my heart. The change in Ben is incredible, even just hearing another bird in the house when Sam was in quarantine helped him, but since they've been together he's been a joy to watch with Sam. As for the training, I had a big setback with that, as 4 days into getting Sam he became unwell, which lasted around 2 weeks, and I lost what little trust we had because I had to catch him to administer his medicine. He still won't step up, but then again neither would Ben or Max, but, they would land on me, interact with me, and eat from my hand every night. But, from my personal point of view, I would rather have 2 happy birdies who interact with each other rather than with me. It's a big decision getting another bird, but, I'm glad I made it.

I have made the decision to not have less than three. That way there is not one left on his/her own when that horrible time comes. I've been always happy with the threesomes that I've had. My opinion, for what it's worth.

Don't get complacent about leaving Erics cage door open helenmat, one day he will surprise you and come out when your back is turned. Just in case you forget his door is open enabling him to escape out a door or window. Just a thought.
