Did anyone watch the One Show last night?
I was a bit miffed as there was a report that all birds in cages should be banned?!
It featured a guy going round rescuing birds that people couldn't look after. But never mind the ones that are in great homes?!
So am sorry but I had to complain!
Here is what I said (dunno what you think?!)
To whom it may concern
I wish to make a comment/complaint about a feature of the One Show programme that was shown yesterday evening.
It was to do with caged and aviary birds, and wanted the One Show to announce that this is not always the case for budgies, parakeet's and other species of parrot.
There are irresponsible bird owners agreed, but there are many irresponsible cat, dog and exotic pet owners too, so caged bird owners shouldn't just be targetted. Just because you get an injury from a cricket bat doesn't mean to say you should ban all cricket bats.
I have 2 budgies in a very large cage who are let out daily to fly freely, fed responsibly (fresh veg and not seed only diet) and in fact love their environment as they go there to feel safe and secure when they wish.
So in short, I felt your report was not fairly told and would like the one show to apologise for being misinformed on this occasion.
Oh and on a final note, I did find it rather odd you should report this particularly when one of your guests on the same night was the legendary bird fancier Bill Bailey who too keeps birds?!
Yours faithfully

I take it you've not had a reply?

Well done for complaining. It does seem odd that they have singled out birds like you said. Our friends who run a sanctuary are rescuing far more rodents and reptiles than birds.
There is a certain time frame within which they have to reply. My partner,David, has made a lot of complaints to the BBC and he always does get a response.

I wondered if anyone watched the oneshow yesterday, there was a chap on that wants to stop parakeets being sold to be kept in cages in the home.

I’ve watched the piece and I think the issue is that this man only sees birds that others don’t want for whatever reason. So he is seeing a very narrow one sided point of view. Most of our birds are fully flighted and not kept in cages. There are some birds also that choose not to come out. I have Eric who no matter how hard I try will not stay outside his cage for more than 2 minutes, even if the cage is left open all day. Surely the fact that he is keeping birds in an aviary is still caged albeit a big one?!

No need to apologise, but I will combine the two threads.

My next door neighbour has a 12 year old king Charles spaniel who has never been for a walk in his life and they do not have a big garden. Nobody has been around to see her over the welfare of the dog. The neighbours behind me have two Golden Retrievers who never go for a walk.
Well done Sam, totally agree.
