I got my budgie over 6 weeks ago and let her settled in for 2 weeks. Then I started to try and tame her. For two weeks now she has been eating from my hand 4 times a day for 5mins so I decided to light put my finger on her lower belly, she slowly shuffled away. So 4 days later a tried again and she flew away. I also tried a stick, but she freaked out when it was only halve away through her cage door. So I'm stuck she confidently eats from hand, sometime putting her neck on my finger. However I carnt move to the next step. Please can someone help me

Patience, and keep trying. That's all you can do. Move your hand far enough away so that she has to step up to get the feed, if that doesn't work simply push a little harder so that she either overbalances or steps up. If you persist, she will get the message sooner or later. In my opinion leaving her for two weeks before interaction simply gives the bird the time to settle into a life of no human interaction, and that is not the reason most people acquire a budgie.

I have a similar problem. My budgie does not like millet, does not like or go anywhere toys, panics as soon as a hand goes near the cage, does not like fresh food of any kind. He will show just slight interest in me if I approach his cage, but keeps as far away as he can. A hand inside the cage causes massive panic. He basically just sits and , eats and nothing else. He got out of his cage once and it took a lot of work to get him back. He seems to be a problem bird. I have never grabbed him and just keep trying patience - mine is sorely tested. Does there come a time to give up, get rid of him and get another bird? I have seen almost no progress in 4 months. My last bird was so different - he was a delight and we had a lot of fun together before he died. .

I have had my Tweetie Pie for about 10 weeks and am going through everything that vonbrangane and budgie11 have described. He is slowly getting better. He no longer flies madly when I put my hand in the cage but will move away. I've gotten to where he will sometimes put one foot on my finger to get the millet but sometimes he won't come near to get the millet. At some point I do want to get a friend for my budgie. I've talked to a local breeder/pet store owner. Her budgies are all hand raised. She recommended getting Tweetie Pie to the point where he'll step up before getting another budgie or he may never step up. It is frustrating that Tweetie Pie isn't taming faster especially when I read about other people who have their budgie stepping up after 2 weeks. My little guy is so cute its worth it to me to have exceptional patience with his training.

They're all so different. Peri's hit and miss with stepping up. Generally if my hand goes towards him in the cage he'll just scuttle away. If I keep my hand still he'll hop onto my arm and then try to run out through the doorway. If he then stays on my hand outside the cage and I have millet I can get him to do step ups between my hand, but then he will only sometimes do it from furniture. And then if he just happens onto my hand half the time he isn't interested in the millet. So there's no particular association of my hand with anything good. He's only just figured out that millet is food. Mind you, my 8 year old bird doesn't get on my hand consistently because I don't do regular training with him. But then I've been fortunate to never be in a situation where I desperately had to get him up and he wasn't having any of it. So I really should do some work with him too. It took me 4 years to fully win his trust, but he did have health issues as a little one so that hindered things. All any of us can do is keep trying. (And we can all hope to find breeders who will be willing to handle their chicks a lot for us in future.

One good thing - Tweetie Pie has gotten so used to my sticking my cell up to take a picture that he doesn't even flinch anymore!
