I noticed after my older male budgie died the rest of my four budgies have been quiet. They still chirp but they're more silent than usual. Is this mourning?Grief? How much longer until they return to normal? Will getting another budgie help them?

I'm sorry your budgie died. Maybe he was top of the pecking order so now they don't know who is in charge.
I guess it could well be grief, just like what we experience. I've witnesses budgies stressed after a passing. Their daily routine is missing someone.
If you've 4 budgies I wouldn't see a need for buying another in term of helping them with their grief. If you had a single one left then yes, but you have 4.
Maybe give them extra special attention to help comfort them e.g. radio on for them and their favourite food and some millet. Ive played budgie sounds before today for mine, you can find them on YouTube or alexa if you have one. That usually gets them chirping up a frenzy.

They could be mourning. Budgies definitely do.
Was he a particularly noisy budgie? They could be missing his singing.

CAll it what you will, but they will definitely be adjusting to the change in their flock. He was the oldest, he would have had a special meaning to each member of the flock, even if he wasn't a dominant bird. Like clt80 I wouldn't recommend getting another bird; let your current birds get used to the other fellow not being there. I have found flock dynamics have changed each time one of theirs has died, sometimes short term and other times for long term.

clt80 Thank you, I was worried a bit at first since his mate also was just looking for him. He was a lot older than them since she and the rest of them were 3 years younger to 4.I'll try youtube to see if that will perk them up

@marianne Marlow He often started some of it. He would sing sometimes when he was napping a lot of the time and I think for them it was a part of their routine. Without him they still play and they're eating but I have noticed they don't make as much noise

Hezz At first I wanted another bird immediately because I think I just feel lonelier myself. Eventhough I have a decent amount of budgies, I can still tell their chirps apart and now he's not here anymore. But it's been about a week now and I've decided I need more time to heal from the loss myself. He definitely took charge and was the more fearless of the bunch, not to mention also being the calmest.
