So it's been about 2 weeks since my older male parakeet of 5 yrs died of an accident. I put a lot of extra safety measures in. About less than two days ago I went to a small pet store in town. The place was kind of crowded, honestly had never heard of it before and it didn't have a lot of reviews but I went in to check it out and came out with a new budgie for 15 and some bird toys.
Got him home and things were great. I kept him separate from the other birds. Just that this morning he took a sudden turn for the worst. He was much more lethargic and so I took him out and wrapped him in a towel and attempted to give him some water with a dropper. He shivered a little and then he would have spasms and contort his body into these positions.
Called the pet store owner to ask her about it in which she said it was probably stress and to cover him up in the cage and make sure the water was on the floor. He died within 10 minutes of all of this. I wouldn't even have made it to the vet.
I'm glad I did quarantine, however my other female budgie had flown to see him and tapped beaks with him so now she is going into quarantine to be cautious. I should have moved him into an entirely different room to be sure.
She asked me if I kept him warm last night because he could have caught a chill. Yet he was covered and so were all the other birds. He was fine until about 2pm and then he quickly went down from there.
It was sort of a gift from my mother and all she could say was, "Well, at least you weren't attached to him". Maybe not as attached as I am to my long term budgies. Which are not sick or have ever been sick. But I still was getting hopeful at this being another chapter in my flock's life and my life.
I apologized to him because there was just nothing I could have done for him except make him comfortable. I mostly held him in the towel until he died. It seemed to prevent him from going into uncomfortable positions. Afterwards I had to disinfect everything and bury him and there wasn't much time to grieve over it. ...
