When Charlie was just a few months old, he developed the habit of eating then chewing along the bars of his cage, going backwards and forwards as if gnawing the bars. The noise nearly drove me mad..He eventually stopped doing it but now at almost one he has started again. He has just been going through a bad moult and does seem a little out of sorts. He eats some seed, then starts the gnawing. It really is as though he is stressed............Ideas anyone please?

Does he do this just after feeding only?

Yes it seems he does. He can do it for half an hour, I worry he will damage his beak.... He uses his cuttlefish, mineral block and iron block. I have just been putting rattan strips all round his cage,,but knowing the little devil he will chew the bars in between.......He isn’t bored either, has lots of toys and is out of the cage a lot......very very tame...

He so reminds me of dear departed Whiskers. Is he is doing what I think then he is not really chewing the bars. Whiskers would go through hell and high water just to get one seed. He would then carry this seed all the way to wherever he started from. He would then roll this seed in his mouth aginst the bars until he either swallowed the seed or dropped it. He would then set off and get another. Not only would he chew the seed against the bars he would fly to my head, slide down my hair and perform the rattle and roll of the seed against the rim of my glasses. There is nothing to worry about. He won't harm his beak. Annoying as it may be but Charlie is entertaining himself.

Is he feeding the bars or chewing them?
I have had budgies feed the bars. Just make sure you clean that spot each day.

Definitely chewing the bars, has his beak right round the bar.....the noise is awful.

I have a hen who has some really irritating habits of chewing bars, (as well as my curtains!!) and many other things she shouldn't. I attache clothes pegs over the areas that she chews, after a while, she forgets and goes on to something else, so the pegs can be removed. But eventually she will return, or even find something else to chew she shouldn't. If she is on top of the cage where she chews the bars I put a big toy, or couple of toys over that particular area. Hope that helps.
