I know this comes up a bit but where is the best place to look for budgie boarding? I need to go away for 2 nights and don't want to leave him by himself. I will ask at the vets but the only place that was recommended to me won't take him as he has French moult. I have a neighbour who took him once but they let me down last year and I had to cancel travel plans because of it. I am in Kent.

Hopefully someone in Kent will be able to recommend somewhere, or find room for him for a couple of weeks. I’d offer, but Cardiff’s well out of your way.

Just a touch - but thanks! I was thinking the breeder might help but as he sold him to me without knowing he had FM, maybe not!

That's a tough one. Hopefully the vet can help out with suggestions or a staff member who would be willing to have him for a couple of days. I hope you find someone who is reliable this time.

I found this article which I think is very informative. In a nutshell, it says that FM is more deadly in young chicks. Older birds may catch the virus but many show no symptoms and may develop immunity over 4-6 months. The virus can be spread through an infected bird's saliva, droppings or feather follicles. It sounds to me that if you have older birds and introduce a bird with FM, your other birds will be OK but you should be careful about breeding because the chicks are not likely to survive. IMO, if one were to bird sit a budgie with FM it would be fine, just keep it in quarantine. www.melbournebirdvet.com/french-moult.aspx

How contagious is French Moult anybody?? That is a question that is open for debate, Shirls, depending on who you talk to. We have had plenty of members who have had FM birds with their others and none have developed it. It is mostly chicks who are susceptible, some can be without symptoms for ages, but can become obvious later on. Sam's Nubs and Skysmum's Jo being the obvious two examples.

I was considering helping you out lila but after a large coffee and a long read of the links tweetiepiesmom and samwiseg quoted, I don't think it would be a good idea to offer my services. I have two very new budgies, and two not so new, but I have no idea of their ages and it seems that FM is more likely to affect youngsters than the oldies. Much as I would have liked to help I'm afraid it is a no, no from me. Sorry. I hope you find someone soon.
