Hello. Thanks for your time. I really need some advice please. I took my budgie Charlie to the vets to get his beak and nails trimmed. Charlies beak grows so fast. The vet we saw has made me feel really horrible. He tutted and stated Charlies cage is far too small. He said that Charlie has no quality of life. And that if I can't supply a larger cage I should think seriously about whether I should have a bird. He thinks Charlies cage is only fit for transporting him. Charlie always seemed happy in the cage he has. This vet has made me feel terrible, like a bad pet owner. I don't want charlie to suffer. But I have no room in my flat for a larger cage. I would rather give him away to someone who has a bigger cage/aviary than have him suffer. Although I would hate to have to do that. Please could someone tell me what they think? Is the cage too small? This isn't Charlies cage. But it is the same as Charlies. Thank you Sue x

Hi Sue
It was wrong of the vet to talk to you like this. He didn't need to judge you to offer you advice.
Can you tell us the dimensions of your birds cage?
Does he get out of cage flight time?
A pic of Charlie would be good too.
We're not going to judge you here just offer friendly advice.

Post a picture of your actual cage and Charlie, and tell us if he gets to fly outside the cage and for how long and how often.
The cage does look small, but it depends on whether he's stuck in there all day.
We might be able to give you some ideas on how to improve things, if necessary.

Thank you. Charlies cage is H42cm x W50cm x D29cm. Here is a pic of Charlie. And of his cage. Charlie won't come away from his toy to show himself clearly in the cage. Sadly Charlie doesn't come out of the cage. I have cats that would love it if he did But he does seem happy. He's forever singing and chirping.

hi sue ,plenty of toys looks healthy,,i breed budgies and they seem happy in a 600 by 450 by300 cage for a couple of months at a time, but they then go into a flight 6ft by4ftby6ft high ,your cage looks ok, i would personnally try and have one with a bit more height, and get rid of those sandpaper perches as these will cause foot problems, replace with some natural branches/twigs of tree in garden

Thank you. Actually thinking about it. Charlies perches are very near the top of his cage. Would it be better to maybe move them down lower? There is a lot of the lower cage he doesn't use. I will look into getting him some natural branches. Thank you.

Thank you Mick. But I really have no room for a larger cage I love Charlie and hate the thought of him suffering. If I knew anyone that had an aviary, I would ask them to take him. He would be happier I know. But I don't.

Sue, I have cats too. What I do is shut the cats out of the room where my birds are flying. If you can do that for at least a couple of hours every day, that will help Charlie 100%.

I'm not really comfortable with letting him out. I doubt I'd be able to catch him to put him back. I'm on my own and only short. So wouldn't be able to reach up. I've also got osteoarthritis in my knees, which doesn't help. I wish I could let him out though.

Think I will put this on swap shop & exchange. Hopefully someone with an aviary or large cage will take him. I'm getting really upset now. I'm being accused of being cruel on another forum. I'm really trying to make Charlies life better.

Sue please don't feel sad, Charlie looks healthy and you obviously care very much about him. No one should be judging you!

Sue
I'm really sorry that people on another forum are judging you. If you didn't care about him then you wouldn't have come and asked advice about his welfare.
If you can get Charlie to me then I can take him.
I already have nine in 3 cages, but they get out of cage time for most of the day.
At the moment Blueboy needs a friend as he's like a spare wheel since his best buddy paired up with Abbie.

While I do agree that the cage you have is too small for a budgie the vet should never have spoken to you like that, if anyone dared to accuse me of not doing enough for my budgies I would be fuming. Don't listen to the nastiness you have heard elsewhere but take in the good advice that you are being given on this forum I do believe that Marianne would give Charlie a wonderful home but you are clearly attatched to him, is there no way at all you could fit a larger cage into your home? Even a cage that is 18" x 18" x 30" would be good although the biggest size you can fit into the room will obviously be best. Maybe if you rearrange some things? Which room in your home does Charlies' cage live? Be it getting him a new cage or letting him live with Marianne I know that you will do the best for Charlie
