Marianne, I really have no idea. I don't see how it could do them any harm, so the worst they could do is ignore it. The only thing I would watch out for would be anyone getting a little too fond of it. Too much iodine can be just as bad as too little, but it would take some time to have an accumulative effect.

Thank you Hezz. I'm going to try it for them. I'm just concerned that they are not getting enough iodine. I have had three birds with iodine deficiencies over the years. One that died from it because a vet misdiagnosed him and by the time he got to a good avian vet (now sadly retired - Alan Jones) who saw it straight away but it was too late.

I would suggest you taste it first Marianne Marlow. The seaweed I have tried from the stores here is very salty. I didn't try soaking it to see if I could get the salt out. It didn't have salt added - just from growing in salt water. I tried it because I read it was healthy for people.

I can't taste it cos I'm vegetarian and it says may contain crustaceans. But I only lightly sprinkled it on top of the egg. They didn't touch it anyway. I had to use a normal dinner plate because somehow the clear one I'd normally use got lost in the move back home. I think this might have been why they were too scared!! Oh, sounds like the usual whenever we try something new on our budgies! The package may have the sodium/salt content listed or you could use your hubby as a guinea pig!

This is how I offered the egg yesterday, on a white dinner plate. None eaten.
Today I offered it in a clear pie dish (the one I normally offer corn in, I also have one as a communal water bowl - for the budgies)
You probably can't tell but they ate some

The nerve of them Marianne Marlow after you went to the trouble of formal service on a white plate!

Wow, a veritable feast Marianne Marlow! Do you always feed them on top of the cage and do they have food inside? I'm interested because I'm wondering if my bud would eat a greater variety of food if I removed the seed from inside and give him a selection on top like you do. He's only shut in at bedtime and I don't think he eats during the night. I slept on the sofa the other night because there was a eight legged freak in the bedroom. He was as quiet as a mouse all night.

They do have food inside their cage, and they do spend time in there eating. But they like to eat from the cage top too. The fresh stuff I usually keep outside of the cages, either clipped to the outside, or on top. Wow, a veritable feast Marianne Marlow! Thanks I do clip basil inside his cage but still struggling to get him to eat anything else that isn't seed. Still, at least basil is something.

I'll occasionally clip basil or dill inside if I think a particular budgies needs to have some away from the others, or if they're locked in for a reason (an engineer visits or something) Thanks I do clip basil inside his cage but still struggling to get him to eat anything else that isn't seed. blue48 I really think that getting them to try new things is trial and error - for example, with carrot: I grate it and serve it on a plate, they ignore it. But if I peg little circles of it about the place, they shred the lot.

Maybe that's the problem, my budgies don't do formal! Blithe "Oh Bertie I have no white shirt and bow-tie, I don't think we can go to dinner tonight." The nerve of them Marianne Marlow after you went to the trouble of formal service on a white plate!
