@sillycat84 I think you'll find that hanging herbs like basil, oregano, dill, etc will work out fine. It will be limp but won't spoil. For some strange reason my guys like limp herbs better than fresh. I hang it in their cage in the morning and then in the afternoon they are picking it apart. I tried giving them fresh in the afternoon but noooo, not their taste. Similarly, grass won't spoil. It will dry out and start to turn to hay. Alternatively, if you can find a source for freeze dried chop for birds, it won't spoil and you can leave it all day. My guys prefer freeze dried over fresh. Of course they do -it costs more. Pampered spoiled babies!!!

tweetiepiesmom If I made chop I'd make a big batch and freeze it, and try to make as dry a mix as possible. My thoughts were to offer that and sprouts in the morning in order to provide variety, along with the larger pieces that they like to pick at as they make good shredding toys at the very least. I just don't tend to buy a wide variety of veg, hence making chop so that they can have stuff that I wouldn't know what to do with. And then dry seed later in the day, and could remove anything that was spoiling. But yeah, can't remove it if I'm not there.

I'm taking Hezz suggestion and will pick out the oat groats as I put the seeds in their cups but I need some help identifying what I should pick out. Below is a picture of the seeds. The larger long seeds are the oat groats - correct? And are the green ones the same but just coated with the "healthy" additive? Do you see anything else that I should pick out? You are correct - the longer seeds are the oats and also the green ones. If you wanted to do a bigger batch, I found using a colander worked fairly well. You just have to make sure you don't leave the canary seed behind as well, as they aren't too much smaller than the oats. They are the lovely shiny seeds like the one sitting right in the light reflection in the photo. They are a good seed; you want to keep them.

To add ... a colander will sift out some of the additives as well, as I see some of them are quite large.

I wondered how good this seed batch was so I picked out the additives/pellets and sprouted them. During the initial soak, I changed the water frequently because the "coating" on some of the seeds was washing off and turning the water. Also I may not have gotten all the little pieces of pellets which probably were dissolving in the water. It took much longer to produce the sprouts than normal, about 6 days rather than 3-4. My house is a bit cooler so maybe that contributed to the longer sprouting time. Here's a picture of the sprouts: You can see seeds in the lower left that didn't sprout. I didn't feed them because my guys have been off and I didn't want to introduce a new food to them. I'm still thinking and rethinking what seeds to feed them and what seeds to sprout to feed them.
