I've decided that I'll probably start taking each of the budgies down to the book nook for some one on one sessions soon, as they distract each other terribly. To help them get used to the room I decided to let the three of them out in there together so they had the new environment but still had each other. Well, getting them into the travel cage first thing was a comedic farce. Munchy went straight in after the food dish, Indie followed, and Yuki then took his sweet time about it. Rather than going inside he went on top and then startled Indie out, so I ended up with them back in the flight cage and just resorted to grabbing them instead. I think Yuki must have a bit of an aversion to the travel cage, because the other two have currently gotten into it and Yuki has decided to get on top. Either that or he really doesn't understand the massive doorway... So the three stooges sat in the window of the book nook whilst I went out for groceries. Indie and Yuki looked very confused when I appeared outside the window. They were remarkably easy to get back into the travel cage, which was pleasing as I'd warned my housemate that we might need to shut the cat in a room for me to carry them up on a playgym. Munchy flew off once upon approaching the door, and Yuki twice, but I think it only took about a minute in total. So yes, quite pleased with today. Might take them down one at a time on Sunday for an initial trial. Then Tuesday we're all off to my grandparents' for my nan's 80th.

That all sounds relatively easy, considering. Happy 80th, Nan!!!

They are very obliging, to be fair to them. Yuki's usually easiest left until last, but other than that.
I will pass on your good wishes!

Thank you everyone, I will pass on your birthday greetings. Haha, probably not, Hezz! Maybe I'll need to get a photo! I asked her how many of the grandbudgies she wanted over to celebrate.

Hezz she said it was entirely up to me! Cos she was going to ask about them coming for Christmas but as I'm working the night wasn't sure. So we can use this to see how long it takes to get them away again. And they can sleep in the travel cage for the night if they have to, I'll be back by 8am. samwiseg It is quite nice having a little flock. Munchy didn't bat an eyelid, he's used to me walking past the other side of a window, but this was a first for Yuki and Indie as they've never been on the ground floor. Edit: I'm in work, OH just sent me this: Oh Yuki...

There are many “Oh Yuki” moments some days. Here’s another one from yesterday: This boy seems to fail to understand the door of the travel cage. I experimented with taking them all downstairs individually today. Munchy was transferred to the travel cage via grab because OH is still practising holding a budgie and Munchy is used to handling, but I managed to get the other two in perched on my finger, which was nice as it meant not scaring them at the start of the process. Downstairs, Munchy was fine but Indie and Yuki were both nervous. Indie does the type of nervousness that involves freezing and being quite compliant. He ate some millet when rewards were offered. Yuki, on the other hand, was doing the very skittish flying about type of nervousness and would not focus at all. So I gave him a short period of time just to experience the room and then brought him back up. I might have to take them all down together to start with so that they can learn from Munchy’s confidence. Still, managed to get them all weighed down there as well so not a bad start. They just need to get used to being apart for short periods and used to the room. In general Yuki seems to have become more skittish than he was. In terms of attempting to handle them I’m experimenting with arching my hand over a food source so that they have to duck under to reach the food or millet. Just to get them used to moving under my hand. I also decided to trial some basic-ish foraging today. I cut large holes in a piece of paper and affixed it over their food plate. Once they figured out there was food despite the paper they started using it. It is making them have to dig a bit more for the food (they don’t seem to have figured out that they can chew the paper yet) but it is also making them bicker over spots to reach the seed more. So I think foraging may be the type of thing that’s more useful for a single budgie, as it’ll keep them occupied and working for their food so good mental stimulation, whereas this lot also have each other. Yuki’s able to hog the bowl like this, though he’s always the last to it, so they seem to be getting a fair share. We’ll see. Most foraging toys seem to be made for bigger birds so would potentially be too heavy for a budgie to move, but it’s hard to say when you can’t see them in person to test. The crinkly paper Yuki loves would be brilliant as they can dig through it to get to the seed, but I’d need something deeper so that they didn’t just blow it off of the seed bowl with their wings! OH is always impressed that even all the husks are gone from the plate, until I explained that them leaving the bowl just blows them off!

Nan says thank you for the birthday wishes. There was a work van outside the house today so we had to go along the road a bit to wait for our lift. One of our near neighbours has a 3-4 year old who was playing on their driveway as I left and he stopped to look at the budgies as we went past. One of the workmen started talking to me about them too. Thanks to Munchy and bringing familiar gyms, Indie and Yuki are seeming pretty settled during this visit. So I think perhaps taking them all to the book nook at once so they can see Munchy's confidence might be a good idea. Then hopefully I can start to bring them individually and have a productive 5-10 one-on-one time with them.
