Our plans to introduce Pippin yesterday morning were scuppered by my OH's annual leave, which he had booked for the event, being cancelled. So we took him up last night, allowing them a few hours of chatter before bed. Indie was chilling in Munchy's cage with him as for some reason he thinks that's the place to go sit quietly during the afternoon. Munchy was brought out as 'the ambassador', simply because he's the tamest even though he rarely shows interest in the other members of the flock. Pippin showed interest so we opened his cage doors and he ventured out. He ended up sitting on top of Munchy's cage whilst we moved Indie back in with Yuki and the Munchy back into his cage (once Munchy had stopped looking like a startled stoat). Fortunately Pippin put himself away in his cage so we didn't have to catch him. So today they're all out getting to know each other. Indie is the most social but he's looking rather tired today, he's been moulting heavily for quite a while now. So they're all just in the startling each other when they move to close stage, but there have been some nice moments. Mainly when Pippin figures out where's safe to land. I've moved Pippin's cage out of the room for now to see if he'll take up residence in one of the other cages yet. He can have it back if he doesn't, but this morning I was dealing with this: Not really feasible for the long-term. We used to call just the Hamberley "Cagemantle Heights"... I think they've been adding outbuildings and extensions!

Love how he just can’t decide how to do it at the start.

Haha, me too! Munchy still does daft things like that though... The lack of cohesion in my flock is amusing. Some flocks perch together. Mine are just scattered most of the time.

@sillycat84 I can only see the 'stranger for breakfast' video, the other links don't work when I click on them. Probably just me but wanted to let you know in case they didn't load properly for others. Loved watching it though. I can almost hear Pippin saying 'so I've secured the 2 food bowls for myself, now what??' Edit - I can see the pics now

I walked in and found him and Yuki exchanging slow beak bashes, and Yuki chased Indie off when he tried to interfere. So I think Yuki is assessing Pippin's suitability for flock inclusion!

Loved the video! Is he being anti-social and trying to establish himself as "kingpin" or just trying to figure it all out?

tweetiepiesmom Definitely figuring things out. He's too nervous to figure out where to land, even if another budgie is on that surface.

Well he's moved into the Hamberley with Yuki, and Indie's currently in the Piano 6 with Munchy. He has stood in the middle of the seed plate to defend it, so I think I may be acquiring separate bowls for the fiends. Buuuut, if I get Yuki on my finger eating millet and hold the sprig so it can be reached from a perch then Pippin will come and join in eating.

Oooo, Yuki used to chase Munchy and Indie apart, didn’t he? I wonder if this is the burgeoning of new-pair friendships! Keep us updated! I love your budgie tales <3

Morgan Indie used to chase Munchy away from Yuki if Yuki went over for a chat. He'd also sometimes be talking to Yuki himself when they were in the same cage, Munchy would be playing and ignoring them, and Indie would suddenly start chasing him from perch to perch. Problem is, a change of pairs requires Munchy to actually be interested in the others. He occasionally chats to Indie. Though he did feed Indie briefly last night, until Indie shifted slightly and then Munchy ran for it. I'm pretty sure that I could move the other 3 down to the Book Nook and just put Munchy in there for company when we're both working and he would hardly bat an eyelid. We shall see what happens. I wonder if there's a way I can set up the big cage to satisfy all 4 of them with places to move away from each other to but still leave enough exercise room. Edit: Just moved Munchy and Indie into the big cage for breakfast. I have Pippin chasing Yuki, Yuki chasing Indie, and Indie chasing Munchy. Indie and Yuki are occasionally chatting. Indie is occasionally pushing himself between Yuki and Pippin to squabble with Pippin. Munchy is alternating between ignoring them to do his own thing or clinging to the cage bars to stay out of the way and breathing a little hard with it.

Oops, I did have it backwards then
Oh my goodness! Aw, poor Munchy, I can just imagine that perfectly.
Well, it is still early days. Hopefully they will figure it out amongst themselves and settle into a new routine. Munchy may still prefer to be a solo bird apart though, which would leave an odd trio. Wait and see is always so hard >.<

Morgan Yeah, he definitely prefers his own space. He's so much more vibrant when housed alone, you can see a total difference in him. The other three seem to have started sorting themselves out. I can see that I will have to remove Indie to be able to work with Pippin by tempting him with Yuki eating millet. Though I did just have success positioning a long piece between the three of them whilst Indie and Pippin were on the cage bars. They're in today, which they would have been anyway if I'd gone to work, because my arm hurts too much to put their stuff up on top of the cages. Gives them time to get their acts together anyway. They'll be out all day from tomorrow until Wednesday. Despite being in a 3 they seem to be getting along quite well. They've stopped squabbling as much, so they must be getting their hierachy sorted out. And unlike Munchy none of them are distressed when they do squabble or get chased about.

So pleased things seem to be going well so far . I LOVE the introductions and watching what pans out, the dynamics certainly change with each one.

He's really settled in, skysmum! He's copying the others and has nibbled at some fresh veg and some of the toys in the cage! He's also willing to come to food that we're holding if the others have. Glad I kept trying with Indie and Yuki, they're really helping me out now.
