I'm glad George is doing ok. He is such a sweetie. It sounds like he's getting stronger.

I put my hand in to offer George some water and he tried to preen my fingers. Then I put him on the floor for a brief minute while I changed his paper towel. Usually I would have held him but he'd pooped on the ladder so I had to wash it and required two hands. He scuttled across the floor trying to fly. I went after him and picked him up and sat on the sofa with him and he made a little squeak a few times. I felt so sorry for him I put him on the edge of the sofa (it's quite low) and be flew to the floor but it tired him out. I didn't realise he may still be able to fly but it seems he can, but it takes a lot of energy. I've put him in the kitchen, half covered, with fresh millet and a basil leaf to rest. Iris wont venture into the kitchen to annoy him.

What a little trooper
He's showing some determination Marianne, that's a good sign.

It does sound promising - he's feisty enough to give you a few bites.

George is amazing. Has his paralysed side improved at all?

That’s def seems promising in terms of what he wants to do. I’m sure he’ll gain more energy as he’s eating etc.
Hopefully though even though it tired him, he’s had a little mental boost

I think the Y Perch was too thick for him to stand on, so I am trying the ladder. I'll leave it a bit longer and hope for the best. I just changed his paper and as well as getting an almighty round of bites, he tried to wrap his feet around my finger. That is very good. I’d be encouraging him to do this every time you do anything with him, plus put him onto the floor perch at every opportunity. If he is going to improve he needs to keep trying.

George is still with us. Currently eating millet with one foot on the ladder. I have tried to get him to stand on it but he just scuttles around the carrier until he's comfortable somewhere.

You must be so glad you made the choice to give him a chance and not take him to the vets Marianne Marlow. I’m hoping the fact he’s eating, drinking, moving, biting and able to grip are good signs of a recovery. Recovering from a stroke is no mean feat but he’s proving that he has the desire to and although it must be incredibly draining on his little brain and he must have feelings of frustration over his body’s partial weakness I think you’re doing everything you can and he stands an excellent chance of making enough of a recovery to have a good enough quality of life, like Penny now does. It’ll be a bonus if he’s able to build up the strength in his wings and regain some flight ability. Everyone is rooting for him, which is so lovely to see from the comments. Well done to you. I know it’s draining looking after a poorly animal.

This afternoon I put George on the floor in Penny's cage with some millet and basil for a change of scenery. To my surprise he climbed up a ladder and made it to the top perch. He's quite unsteady and his left leg is no longer paralysed, but quite weak. He falls back a bit and then flaps his wings to right himself. I hope I wont regret this. I'll put him back in his pet carrier for bedtime so he's safe. George climbing the ladder in Penny's cage He made it to the top Visitors What is George doing in my cage?

At about 20 seconds in to this short video you can see him almost fall off and right himself by flapping his wings.
He's done it a lot but seems to be getting used to it and using his wings to compensate for his bad leg.

So far he's spending most of his time preening. I don't think he's eaten anything.
I offered him water in the little medicine pot and he took a big gulp.
