Hi Ira,
It’s not totally obvious even with him in front of you but Sandy’s wing markings do look to be green (particularly the upper wing) and Sky’s look to be blueish. Neither are that far off grey though but do have a touch of their dominant body colour. Nice to know that they are probably brothers. We’ve just been watching Sky give Sandy a long head preen. They have their stand-offs at times but generally get on really well together.
When reading up on Spangles we did find a photo on a Spangle breeders website that looked very much like Sky (blue). It was described as a violet cimmamon spangle yellow face type 2 but we’d never have described Sky as violet!
Many thanks for taking the time to share your advice with us - it’s really appreciated. 😇

I’d like to see a photo of the back of your hen. Her chest markings are more in keeping with a recessive pied than dominant pied.
The two boys are definitely spangles; if cinnamon the dark markings on the wings will be brown rather than grey or black.

I'm not good at telling apart types of yellowface, but they sound like opaline spangles to me. Not sure if they're the full combination of mutations that people refer to as 'rainbows'.
I did wonder about the colouring pattern, Hezz, and should have thought to ask for a photo of the back of the hen. I went too much off of the amount of wing markings if I recall.

Never such a thing as too many photos for most people here. Hezz you're probably better with recessive pieds than me. I can't see the pied spot of a dominant pied, but with the amount of wing markings... possibly a clearflight pied?

I don’t see Sky as being opaline, and while Sandy has some opaline factors, doesn’t have the lack of markings down the back of the neck to shoulders. I think this might be termed an incomplete expression; I could be wrong.

Sorry, Ira, I didn’t see these last photos this morning … Summer certainly look to be dominant pied from the back. Clear flights don’t have the patchy markings across the chest/belly, and on my tablet I can’t get a good look at her eyes - does she have an iris ring? If so then she is dominant; if not, recessive. She is also an opaline, and there does seem to be a very small dom pied patch although she’s got her head turned towards us. I can’t add anything more about the boys as the colours are all wrong - too much light.

Thanks Hezz and Ira. It’s quiet indistinct but Summer does appear to have an iris ring. It’s not that obvious much of the time, but becomes more clear when she is alert and has her feathers leaned back. I think with that and your advice we can consider her a dominant pied - it would certainly seem more appropriate given her place in the flock than being recessive. The boys try not to cross her whatever she is!
Thanks again everyone for your warm welcomes and advice!

That’s just being a hen. Hens rule!
