So sorry to hear about this criswell . You must be so worried.. I've been worried with Milli's feather loss too.. How is Milli getting on, mona?
There was a definite progression of feather loss with Dean Stockwell. He lost his tail feathers first, then his flight feathers. Next it was the downy feathers under his wings, then his tummy feathers. With each moult he lost more feathers and didn't grow many back again. Then he lost feathers on his back and his chest, then his neck. He still had feathers on the tops on his wings and on his head when he died. It was a fairly gradual and constant loss of feathers.

criswell I don't know how she is actually doing. She came at our house in Oct 21 without her long tail feather. She must have been one or two month old back then, as predicted by forum members. Her short tail feather are still there. Her wing feathers are there but the layers of long ones look less to me. She had been loosing feathers on her neck and under the wings. Within a week, it was very quick then and her tummy chest went almost bald.. her back, area around her eyes also has less feathers. We are treating entire flock with ivermectin. She has a lot of pin feathers around her eyes/cheeks and chest.. She is growing feathers, but I'm just so worried abd scared to type this back on this thread. Reva shares the cage with her. Daize in another cage and cookie berry in another cage. Just very worried about the entire flock too. It was difficult to save them back then too. It hasn't been much time but she is so close to my heart already.. I have found out a lab collection centre that collects chest feathers for pbfd test. She didn't have any chest feathers. Just growing back. Just thinking whether to go for it or not. She screams as if she is going to be killed.

mona Maybe you could ask the company if they will test a swab from the cage. The company I used usually tests blood and feathers but when I asked they were able to do a sample from the cage. I just used a cotton bud/swab to rub over all the perches and Dean Stockwell's swing and favourite bell. If Milli does have it then it should show up from a cage sample, as long as you haven't just clesned the cage and it means you won't have to stress her. It sounds like Milli's feather loss has been a bit more rapid than Dean Stockwells. He did sometimes grow a few more feathers and most of the time he had pin feathers on his tummy and chest but they didn't grow into to proper feathers.

I got the APV (polyomavirus) PCR test result and that was negative. It would have been very unlucky if he'd had both viruses but since I wasn't sure which virus he had I got them to test for both.

Poor Milli, I'm sorry to hear that mona. You must be so worried about her as well as the whole flock. I hope that the others stay well and that maybe you can get Milli tested so that you can get a diagnosis x

I don't have much to report. We've decided not to get Dexter tested yet as he's still very easily unsettled. We were going to take him up to the vets during the school holidays but I don't think that would be the best for him. I freaked him out earlier by picking up a box of budgie toys that was near his cage and then frightened him again when I was dusting the mantelpiece which isn't even very near his cage. I'll have to move him out of the room to do more cleaning in there I think. I was surprised that he got frightened as he's been doing really well for the past few weeks. I've not attempted the deep clean of his cage yet. I'm leaning more towards buying him a new cage...

I often find myself caught in a similar thinking-trap as you, criswell. You know your budgie might possibly benefit from some procedure but you know for certain that the experience will result in a degree of trauma. Which way do you go? And when? You can only do what feels right for you and hope for the best outcome, as I do for you and Dexter.

Poor Dexter being so easily spooked

Thanks loz and Marianne Marlow. He's been so brave for the past few weeks that it surprised me that he was spooked today. He's having another little moult so that might be making him feel a bit more vulnerable. He didn't go near the back of his cage for ages his fright and used the seed pot at the front which is his least favourite. He does have a bit of history with frights associated with that table so may be he remembers. Plus I haven't moved anything from their in ages. It has the spare cage sitting on it which he likes to play on top of and there was the box of toys behind it. I did also changed the cloth on another table so maybe it was just too much change for the little fella. Things being moved is definitely far more scary than loud noises. He was singing his head off with loud machine gun fire on the TV yesterday. He definitely doesn't trust me again at the moment which is such a shame as we were getting on so well. I will have to gain his trust again but hopefully he will have forgiven me a little bit by the morning. Goodness knows how he will react to being put in the smaller spare cage while I clean his usual cage. So I'm still undecided about how to proceed but will update once I know

Good luck criswell. I've found with my birds that they will panic if things aren't to their liking until they exhaust themselves. At that point they become accepting of the situation. This is even true of Eeyore, my most nervous bird. I don't know if Dexter will "max out" on his upset or how he'll ultimately react to your proposed changes but I thought I'd share my experience of this sort of thing. It might be similar for Dexter - or it might not! All the best for your deliberations and decision.

Oh dear, poor Dexter being such a nervous Nellie. Poor little Bunji is a bit the same, but understandable considering his previous life. Hopefully Dexter will begin to feel comfortable and secure again very soon.

Thanks Hezz. I won't do anything controversial in the lounge today. We'll just watch TV and sing songs Dexter has always been quite highly strung but it seems a bit worse now he's on his own. Thanks for sharing your experience loz. You've reminded me how Dexter behaved when last he was in he spare cage. I popped him in their the last time he was poorly so he could get a bit of respite from the others who'd been chasing him about and he didn't settle at all and kept flapping about, jumping from perch to perch, climbing the bars so I figured it was doing more harm than good and 'rescued' him after 5 minutes.

I have a similar dilema with Eeyore and Patch. Patch often gets an excess of attention from Eeyore that interferes with napping and feeding ... but the fallout if I separate the two is sometimes fearsome. What do you do?

I've taken the plunge and bought a new cage. It will be much easier for Dexter and it will stop me worrying that there might still be some virus lurking between the bars that I've missed. Then I can really, really, really thoroughly disinfect the old one and pack it away for some months until I might need it in the future.
I was going to buy a new tablet but I got my old one working again so I've used the money to buy a new cage instead. And some new perches.
