We found and captured a budgie in our garden today, York area. He was very hungry and tired but now now fed , warm and safe. Please can anyone advise how I can track his owner from the details on his leg ring . I don’t own a budgie, but joined you guys in the hope of re uniting the little fella with his owners. 3 of us spent two hours searching Facebook for lost budgie posts ,the internet in general and local vets for any information that might help ( the RSPCA was closed) How long could he have been at large ? Is it possible to say how far he might have travelled from his home area ? Any help much appreciated .Thank you Lainey

I cannot help with your questions but I have to say, well done coming to the poor budgie's rescue. You are a hero. I hope the little fella can be returned to his worried owner but if that is not possible, I hope he can be safely re-homed.

Hello and well done for rescuing the poor little budgie. The leg ring will have information on it that the breeder put on….could you look up the Local Budgerigar society and give them a call….They should keep records of the breeder and they should know the owner……..It’s unlikely that the bird will have flown far or been out long. What colour is its band?

Unfortunately bands (and breeders) aren’t always registered, often they are put on by the breeder for their own book keeping, but hopefully this little fellow may be part of a registered breeder. It sounds as though you have covered most avenues - vets, FB lost and founds, contact the breeders’ society. If you join a local lost and found FB group you will have probably the best chance of reuniting him with his owners as many people share posts across different groups I’ve found. Good luck, and well done.

I must confess I’m already very fond of the little chap ( I’m presuming he’s a boy, the bit above his beak is blue) and , although I will do the right thing and continue to try and find his owner, he has a home if we can’t. 😊

Hi , thank you again for your help and information . I’ve already become very fond of the little fella, so if we can’t find his owner he has a new with me. Also my son in law says he looks like the budgie he had as a child, and would love to have him too! So whatever happens, he will be loved and looked after .We will do our utmost to find his owners first though. My husband , at this moment ,is on his way to the RSPCA to ask if they have had any enquiries or know of any contacts we can try ( you can’t speak to anyone over the phone now unless it’s about an emergency or a lost dog ! ) The leg ring is silver/ stainless steel and complete . I will keep you all up to date, and thank you all again for taking the time to respond to my post 😊🥰

I hope you find his owner but if you don't, we'd love to hear how you are getting on with him. If you need suggestions about his care, don't hesitate to ask. If you do find his owners and decide you'd like to get your own budgie, they make lovely pets and we can also help with tips on care. Good luck!

All you can do is your best in finding his previous owners. I really do think many people think once the bird has escaped that there is no hope of being reunited and don’t put much effort into looking, and many who find birds don’t bother trying to reunite them. Thanks for being one of the others who do care. I’ve been in the odd position of losing a budgie through escape but taking in one who was found but no owner coming forward. Yours is a good outcome either way - bird and owner reunited, or if not, birdie has a loving home, even if not the original one.

When they were visiting the little budgie instantly started chattering to one of my Granddaughters ,they had an amazing “conversation” back and forth for ages ! They have two love birds and a lovely aviary ( that my husband built) , and can take his turn in there, but not at the same time as the love birds, apparently they are very territorial and have powerful sharp beaks ! I took him down yesterday for his first turn in the aviary, he came to the front and chirruped (happily?) at us , and had a good fly round. At the end of the day my daughter said he was patiently waiting for her , back in his cage ! They live in walking distance so I can visit him whenever I want to . I must confess, although I only had him for a few days, I miss him and the house seems so quiet without his little voice interrupting the silence every now and then . I’m just waiting for them to choose a name ❤️

Congratulations Lainey on a job very well done. As sorry as I am for the former owner, I feel this is a very good outcome indeed. What a lucky budgie!
