Not sure if my bird is sick or what? Need help My yellow budgie is fairly young. Every 4th or 5th day she gets lazy, puffs up, isolates, moves around cage bottom, and jerks her head around like sort of convulsive, and seems sick! BUT, she eats drinks and sort of moves around a bit. She also paces or pecks at the cage bottom she looks ill and sort of acts that way. But then she gets totally fine for a few days or so and then bam, like clock work, she does it again. Has been happening for a few weeks now. Avian Dr in local area is out so I don’t know. She does this thing for a couple or few days and then she’s good for a few days or so, and then repeats. Her poop is basically normal colors but a little soft or splatter like. Anyone see this before? Don’t know what to do!

If you think she seems sick, get her to an avian vet as soon as possible.
How old is she?
Can you post a photo?

Thanks for reply’s. I live in US. Avian vet is gone with Covid but but coming back soon. Like clock work She’s back normal. Not puffed. Flying all over. Playing with toys. Super normal and looking good. Now I’ll bet it go’s for like 5 days and then bam she’ll act all weird again for a day or two and then back to fine. That’s what’s been happening. So as of now she’s totally acting fine again and playing well with the others. It’s so strange!!

Definitely get her to the Avian vet as soon as she is back. It could be a number of things that is wrong with her. What do you feed her on? Also it might help if you can put some pictures of her on please….

Can’t seem to get pic to post from my iPhone. Not sure how to do it. Don’t see a function to let me upload or post pic to this reply section. She Continues to do fine today. Eating and playing like normal. Of course, she always eats like normal no matter what. Their diet consists of seed, some apple. Some broccoli, some millet, and stuff each day.

Bobby she is beautiful…when you say she is fairly young how old approximately? do you think she has lost weight? Or does her beak seem to have grown? When does the vet get back ? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to see if anyone can help. It’s so worrying when our buds are Ill, I have been going through it myself with my bud too, so I know how you feel….

Here she is playing on top of the little tent we have for her. She like a year old was told. So see how she looks and plays and acts normal right now. If she does it again I’ll post that too. Not sure when the avian Dr comes back.

Other more experienced members will be along to give advise soon, but I am not sure you should have the tent/ nest in the cage…..Is she the only bird in the cage?

I tend to agree with ladybirdThe tent will possibly encourage egg-laying and might also be difficult to keep clean.

Have two others. We try to isolate her from the others when not at play. Have a large area for them all to play and fly and roam. Lots of toys perching stations and treats. Went a little crazy when we got these..lol! Have 3 cages lots of toys, and whole big room dedicated to their flying and playing. We play bird chirp songs and they chirp and talk and fly and perch all over the place. Is the tent thing a bad idea?? Seemed to like crawling over it.. 🤷. The others have never exhibited any weird behaviors. The yellow one looks and acts totally normal for like 4 or 5 days strait, then puffs, isolates, gets lazy, pecks the cage bottom, and sleeps a lot, like she’s sick, for like a good day or two, then all the sudden, back to normal and looking fine. The weirdest thing. Never had a bird to that. It’s like clock work now for a month. Avian Dr is gone and no one else will look her over. So, I really just wondered if anyone else ever experienced anything like this before?? So strange!

I have two male birds. They do go to the bottom of the cage and peck around. I keep the cage bottom clean because I don't want them to eat an old piece of food which might make them sick. I suggest you take the tent thing out and not put it back. Watch her behavior and see if it change once you remove the tent.
