Hey all. In case you missed my previous thread, here's the nutshell: my budgie has been twitching a lot and picking at his vent for a few days and it is preventing him from sleeping, I can't get him to an avian vet as none within distance are taking new animals and local regular vets won't take him unless its to euthanise. I've been advised on forums it might be mites so I'm treating him for that with literally no other options. However, I went to clean him today to inspect his vent and it seems very swollen? Is this prolapse? He has been passing normal droppings for most of the day with a few runnier ones. Since I've run him under a warm tap he is twitching much less and appears to have gone to sleep for the first time in over 24 hours. Obviously I cannot get him to a vet (believe me I have tried) so what's the deal here? Is this going to be something he can recover from without vet treatment? EDIT: forgot to mention his vent was trimmed recently

Sorry I can’t help but hopefully someone will be along soon….. Have you cut the feathers round his vent? He looks like my Charlie who has long feathers and he has to be trimmed round there. So he looks much the same round his vent as my Charlie. Doesn’t look swollen to me but as I say it needs someone with more knowledge. Good that you have put the picture on.

Sorry, yes, I thought I had written it in the original post but I had to trim around his vent a few weeks back because, as he can't fly (French moult) and is less active in the evenings now he's old, droppings sometimes catch on his feathers and build up whereas with movement they would previously fall off.
Or at least that's as much as I was able to trim before he squirmed free, hence the "bad haircut" vibe!
I'm glad to hear you don't think it looks that swollen, I was getting worried. I think it is definitely the source of his physical discomfort though because his twitching has reduced a fair amount since I ran him under the tap.

I have sprinkled some cayenne pepper on his seed too, hopefully that will help with his discomfort.

I would be worried it would get in his eyes…. You could put Vaseline on his vent, it would sooth him. So upsetting for you regarding the vet situation, I am sure a dose of Metacam would have helped him so much. I wish you lived near me, I keep it in now for my Charlie and it helps a lot.

On another note are you sure he has french moult? he seems to have flight feathers. Well more "suspected" French moult from a regular vet as I've never been able to get it 100% confirmed with my lack of access to an avian vet but he has not been able to fly for most of his life, I had to get him a tall cage so he'd get his exercise going up and down that. His feather quality has improved in the last few years so he doesn't have as many feather deformities as he used to, he can actually fly again now but often doesn't because he just never has. He'll fly across a room maybe once every two or three days, if that?

His vent does seem to be slightly swollen, but I don’t believe it is prolapsed. Savlon is a soothing cream and safe for your bird in case he does pick at it. Vaseline is not as soothing but can be used if you have no Savlon. A warm saline water wash beforehand may be helpful as well. The added benefit of using a cream is that the poops are less likely to stick to either his feathers or his vent, giving the inflamed area a better chance to heal.

He seems very poorly and weak today I don't know if he's been able to sleep or not as I had to sleep myself, being up all night with him the previous night, but I would guess not or very little. I don't think I want to subject him to being picked up and cleaned again in his current state. I think I'm going to see how he gets on for the next 7-8 hours into the afternoon and then make a decision. Given that I don't even know if his problem is mites (I inspected him in the night and didn't see anything), I don't want to put him through another night hoping that the treatment works and prolonging his suffering.

I am so sorry Magpie that Charlie is no better. It doesn’t sound like mites that he has…. Is he still twitching? I think all you can do is keep him warm and quiet, I usually cover part of the cage so he can hopefully rest. It’s absolutely disgusting that no vets are willing to help a sick bird or at least prescribe something to help with the fits……. I would definitely complain loudly, it’s just not right and making me so sad for you…….. Is there an emergency vet that might give you advise?

He's gone his coordination was all over the place, could barely stand on my finger and kept falling down to the bottom of cage whenever he tried to move between perches. Still twitching, too. Eventually he laid down on my bed, heavy breathing with eyes closed and thats's where he stayed. I'm heartbroken of course but I'm so relieved his suffering is over. I loved that little budgie more than I can put into words, I'm self employed so I've been with him virtually 24/7 for the 12.5 years I've had him. I tried getting him submitted in an emergency slot with an avian specialist but was told no to that, too. I think I'm going to complain to my vet who refused the offer to be helped on the phone from a specialist because of their phobia. It's disgraceful really. I don't know if he could have been saved, but he could have been correctly treated.

Oh I'm so sorry. At least Charlie is at peace now & not suffering & his end was in the comfort of his own home & with you by his side.
I understand your frustration with the vets & fully agree that you should make complaints. Often, small birds seem to be treated like they are not very important... but we know different - they may be small but their loss is huge.
Fly high beautiful Charlie.

Oh no! Terrible news I am so so sorry. You did your best, rest in peace Charlie xxxx. You must complain and loudly, you were not helped in any way. Those vets should be throughly ashamed of themselves, and I would make sure they know it…. So sorry again 😢💐❤️

I'm so very sorry for your loss. He lived to a good age with you. Yes, definitely complain. If someone is scared of birds, why work in a vet surgery it's preposterous.

When you are able, please do make a post about Charlie's life (with photos if possible) in "Fields of millet". I do find it helps me mentally to do so when one of my birds pass.
