Bit of advice anyone….. Herbie has certainly found his feet. Since we let him out the first time a couple of days ago, he just wants to be out all the time. He is of course landing on the curtains…mirror etc but he does know how to fly back into his cage himself……. But it’s not safe for him to be out yet while we are not in the room, also our room is open plan. This morning after he was uncovered and he had eaten his breakfast, he started going absolutely crazy to be let out….throwing himself at the cage doors, then running upside down on the cage ceiling…..jumping up and down like a kangaroo all around the floor……., I don’t want to start letting him out this early while we are eating our breakfast, but I do feel so mean. I am worried he is going to hurt himself……. I have gone from quiet little Charlie to a very hectic Herbie……….. I am NOT complaining, but anyone got any ideas how to help this little firecracker 🤣

Herbie really is a bundle of energy! Maybe you could leave him covered for a bit longer in the mornings so you can have your breakfast first. That might help until you come up with a longer term plan.

Oh WOW where does he get his energy from……He is getting quite tame now too…..he launches at my shoulder as soon as I open his cage up. Then he zooms round the room landing on anything he fancies. Then he aims straight for the cage and goes straight in. . All this is very lovely but we are having the problem of him wanting to come out a lot…….He is like Skippy the kangaroo bouncing around his cage demanding to be let out and shouting loudly…….. Wow I hope he calms down a bit soon……. we have certainly gone from one extreme to another 😱

Sounds like it is age related. As he gets older, he'll calm down. For now, use his desire to come out train him. Block his door with your hand - he can't come out unless he gets on your hand!

I would go with keeping him covered until you are ready to have him out in the morning. If possible have him sleep in a different room, not that it sounds as though he is missing out on any sleep!!! , but this will help keep him controlled and hopefully a little calmer if you are not moving about around his cage.

What a lovely little naughty boy 😆❤️🐥😍 It’s amazing to have them in our lives just filling it with joy, loud noises and chaos 😆 I’m glad he’s entertaining you and he’s comfortable enough to land on you and demand freedom 😄 Wish you the best journey of love and joy 🐥❤️🥰

The exuberance of youth. He is in his first week with you, so everything is still so new to him and he wants to get out there and explore. It's good that he goes back in on his own, I expect after a few weeks he will settle down.

I agree with Hezz, keeping him covered for a little longer. I am sure he will calm eventually when his new home is not so new and exciting to him

Chipper was 6 weeks old when he came here and I remember him buzzing about the place, hovering like a humming bird at everything and zooming all over the place.

One thing I do need to correct and am asking because I have never had a budgie that bites this young and he does….. Charlie did when I was giving him meds, but that can be excused….and other passed budgies have never done it that I can remember. But Herbie is only seven weeks old and he does mean it when he bites……..any suggestions? I definitely don’t want him to be a biter but at this age I need to be careful with the No command…….Acckkkk doesn’t bother him……… He is becoming more confident every day and fitting in beautiful….it’s just the biting 🤷♀️

Does he bite when he's sitting on you or does he lounge at you and bite when you put your hand in the cage or near him?

It’s an odd one this……..He seems to really dislike being in the cage and goes frantic to get out . As I undo the door he is already gripping into the door and goes for my hands/ fingers as I open it. He then jumps straight onto me and sits happily on my shoulder. When he flies off and lands somewhere where I have to reach him, he will jump onto my hand. He doesn’t like to be touched like a lot of budgies…tickled under the ear region. So I just don’t………. He has a big enough cage, plenty of toys …already we love him , he does seems very feisty for seven weeks old….I don’t want the biting to get out of hand…

It sounds like he's biting to get what he wants. If so, maybe the old advice is best - don't react and leave your hands where they are. One other thing I suggest is that you open the door slowly and let him get used to it. Take your other hand, block the opening as you open the door so he can't rush out. Some of this may be just his youth and newness to you. I'll be interested in what others think. I like that Hezz has her birds trained on how to come out. I wonder how Marianne Marlow lets hers out.

Sounds like the biting is overexcitement.
Blithe used to bite me when I offered my hand (it was more of a pinch really) but then he'd step on
