They definitely do have feelings and grieve just like we do. Perhaps not as expressively but then they have the mentality of a 3 year old child so I am told. They definitely understand.
I have lost 3 birds and it never gets any easier. But the happy moment outweigh the bad ones thankfully.

Sorry that you and your daughter lost your much loved bird, Simon. I too have a bird with an abdo tumour but at least I have had Bluey for six and a bit years, so while not an old budgie, he is not young either, but he is the very best of budgie pets you can get. I know it is only time before I (I should really say we, as he is one of the boys) lose him and that is not easy either, not knowing when he is going to take another turn for the worse. May I ask how old is your daughter? It sounds as though the two of you really love your pets and that's the way it should be. I do hope the three of you (Lucy too) help ease each others loss. And by the way, welcome.

Thank you for being so welcoming! My daughter Sophie and I had a terrible loss only 3 days ago, and joining this forum has helped considerably. Domingo was only 14 months old and unusually developed a large internal growth by his kidneys - inoperable I'm afraid. His mate Lucy is very distressed - this can last a few weeks by previous experience. I will put a post on the 'Fields of Millet' sometime, but for the moment quite honestly it's too upsetting. It's lovely to be among such nice people who understand these things and we can't help but smile at the wonderful photos and comments that are posted. I am really sorry for your loss. It very difficult and saddening to lost a loved pet. Rest in peace Domingo.

Thank you for all your kind comments! Hezz, Sophie my daughter is 20. She works part time so has been able to budgie-sit Lucy while I'm at work. I hope you get as long as you can with Bluey - I know that with Domingo he still had a good degree of quality of life up to the end and we avoided euthenasia. Lucy is calming down a bit now, I'm hoping we can consider introducing a new bird, or possibly more, in a week or two. That will be the subject of another post!

Sorry, Simon, that probably seemed a rather personal question. It is good you two have something in common, as many families find themselves with nothing in common and no connection. I did wonder if she was still school-aged as I find it lovely when families share the budgie-bug. Good luck with the budgie-hunting.

Nothing over personal about that question at all! And you're right about the family bond. Sophie has had the budgie bug from a very young age, if anything her love of them is even greater now. I have always kept them as pets - my own budgie bug started at the age of 6 when I had my first bird, Joey. And I have experienced some remarkable longevity over my time - I had a smashing cobalt grey called Suzy who lived to 14, and a most gentle and tame grey green cock called Tyney who reached the ripe old age of 12! You never forget them, do you?

I'm trying to update my profile, but can't get the "submit" button to work. Thought it might be the avatar thing, and clicked on the above link and was told that article doesn't exist any more. ??

Maybe it is deleted by the thread creator. What info are you looking for? The thread (http://budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/in....splay&thread=32) was in answer to someone else having problem with getting their avatar posted and now it is deleted . I was trying to update my profile by uploading an avatar and creating a signature line. The submit button just wouldn't work....on multiple attempts and refreshing and opening a new link. I kept working at it for about an hour........finally updated one issue at a time, submitted it. then, the next item, until it all got accepted. Strange.

Sometimes I have similar issues but only in Internet Explorer. Everything works fine in other browsers
