I was wondering why many cages (especially high end ones) don’t have floor bars ? anyone knows why or if it’s better? I finally found (lead free bars) cages and they don’t have floor bars what about the poop? It’s accessible without the bars Should I just get it and put a soft blanket on the bottom with papers on it and change the papers multiple times a day? any input would be appreciated

I know I am new to the budgie business by I cannot imagine a birdcage without floor bars. At least, not one intended for everyday use.
I'll be interested to see where this discussion leads!

My guys' cage had the grid at the bottom and I removed it. I had read about accidents where the bird's foot got caught between the bars and they were injured. A friend had that happen with her love bird, he struggled and died. The grid in my cage did not slide out for cleaning - another reason why I removed it.

I wouldn't put my birbs in a cage with that feature even temporarily. And not being able to slide it out for cleaning is poor design.

loz I guess I don't understand what is meant by 'floor bars'. Can you snap a picture? Many of the cages here have a metal grid above the bottom liner. The theory being that poop, etc., will fall through the grid and the birds won't be running around in their poop. I've read that people with bottom grids will put paper on top of the grid to prevent accidents.

Sorry, had an accident in the kitchen involving a glass pan lid that was under its own power and ignoring Newton's Laws regarding motion. Yes, it's worth clarifying this issue. I do not consider this kind of grid safe for a cage floor: This kind of grid I do consider safe:

loz, thanks. I agree concerning the grid. I'm not sure I've seen any cages here with the bars on the floor so I can't offer an opinion on them.

My big cages came with a barred floor panel but I never use them, always afraid they would hurt their feet, I think most of use don’t use them, they a devil to clean too. Have to say I’ve never seen one like yours.

My hagen vision cages have floor bars, but I cover them with a towel and newspaper on top of that, so they never see the bars.
My imac cages have no floor bars.

The white flooring in my pic is from a small travel cage and is meant to illustrate the style. The big cages aren't identical but you get the idea. The budgies spend little time on the floor of the cage, fleeting moments really. Chocobo occasionally gets the urge to wander around on the flooring but she has no difficulty with it. I only cover the flooring if I have a sick birb.

I’ve never seen a cage that didn’t have some form of grill/bars for the flooring, usually with a plastic tray underneath. A week’s worth of newspaper over the top keeps cages and grill clean regardless of whether the grill slides out or not. Some cages would leave a gap between the floor tray and cage sides if the grill was removed. I’m not sure I have ever seen a high-end cage.

Not that I can use those grates with the way I've cobbled too cages together, but I removed them as well. They were a pain to clean, and if I put newspaper on top there's no point in having them anyway.

I received a jet-washer as a gift with an insurance policy, years ago. I didn't ever use it but wow, it's useful for cleaning the grates of cage floors and the waste trays

Hmm. Not sure a jet-washer is an option for some of us. Could make for an entertaining video or two, mind.

Thank you all for your replies and input Very useful I’ve been looking for safe (lead free) cages for a long time Vision cages aren’t available and the only one available on Amazon is way expensive So I recently found a brand called (Voltrega) it’s made in Spain and the cage’s bars are made with lead free epoxy paint which is safe even the plastic but all the cages don’t have the bottom bars The normal generic cages (way cheaper) have floor bars but not safe paint This Voltrega and another Italian brand called (MPS-but not sure about the lead free issue )also had no floor bars these two brands are much more expensive and really well made (very good quality) that’s why I called them high end cages I guess 😆 I’ll post a pic of the one I’m planning on getting (Voltrega) and I have to deal with the no floor bars issue because it’s my only safe option here Thank you all again for all your input I really appreciate it ❤️🙂
