Too right! There is no need to spend up big to amuse a budgie. I have a big thick bottlebrush branch that I am slowly but surely thinning down the ends of to fit the cage as a perch ....... I think the lovely bark is going to be stripped off before I get it into the cage, the way Smudge is going.

What a fantastic toy stace, tell me now, does Boo like it? ? Yes, he's been chipping away at both the bark and the cuttlebone and banging the washers. He won't touch cuttlebone if just attach it to the cage so I have to keep coming up with inventive ways to attach it to toys. The bark on that bit of wood is very chewy, almost like cork.

Bailey plays for ages with a washer and wingnut..flipping them... and they make a nice thud, which he likes. Also I have silver little coasters which end up being picked at and flipped on to the floor... little things eh........... Washers are one of Boo's favourite things too. He loves flipping them, chucking them off benches and tables, and then rolling them along the wooden floor. They often get a good talking to as well.

Here's Boo's latest chunky toy. It's a big chunky bark hunk, with chunks of cuttlebone threaded on seagrass rope. On the top is a cute little palm hat. You need a drill to make the holes in the wood. To make the thread holes in the cuttlebone you need to use something very sharp, gently starting on the soft side till you reach the hard back side, then turn it around and gently break through the hard bit. I attached mini stainless steel washers and nuts to jangle at the bottom. Picked those up at the hardware store. LOVING this stace and i love the idea of washers and bolts too, this has my brain going . The wood is from an old willow tree. The bark is really thick, chunky and soft. If you can find any I highly recommend it. It's very chewy. The small stainless washers seem to only be available in a few hardware stores here. Most places only stock the zinc ones.

Am loving this thread, is making me want to make more stuff! Me too samwiseg, I think I am going to have to get some washers, I remember seeing a vid of Boo playing with a washer. Seeing as my buds have just chewed thru one of my creations, I will have to re-invent it with some washers on!

I use stainless steel key rings as links with my toys. They are as cheap as chips, easy to use and no, the birds don't get them open. Also washers and hard plastic beads are a good combination - they seem to enjoy the sound of one hitting the other.

I made this for him a while back. It's pretty but he's not remotely interested in it. But this little one, made from eucalyptus bark, cuttlebone and a balsa block is a hit.

Not a toy exactly, but I just made him this perch from a Paperbark tree. It's only been in there a day and he's already had a good go at stripping it bare.

I have apple tree branches attached to the conservatory ceiling, mostly to stop madam Jo attacking the wood and wiring.

No they won't because it is not forbidden. Jo so far this morning demolished 4 balsa blocks, 2 of those tubes made out of woven stuff (can't remember the name) . She is now underneath the paper on the floor! If Pip goes near her she soon gets rid of him. She is on a mission. She is in such a mischievous mood after moulting.

That's when my two are at their most mischievous too Sue, just after they've come out of a moult. I love that time, it's like they don't know what to get up to next, lol.
