I'm glad he is okay and hope he stays that way.

Glad to hear he is doing ok. Hopefully the vet will follow up? May take a bit of poking them by phone though which is annoying!

That's a bit extreme! Hope Squeak is still doing ok. My previous vet left the practice rather than follow up on my Squeak 😡

That's a bit extreme! Hope Squeak is still doing ok. Squeak continues to be very well and even a light moult is not slowing her down. I am very proud of my girl.

I'm glad Buddy is doing well now. It might take a little while for the professor friend to have time to work out what is going on with Buddy. But if you've haven't heard anything in a week or two I would give the vet a call to ask if he had any ideas.

The Avain vet phoned this morning and we had a lengthy chat. She said she had been in touch with her professor and had showed him the videos and explained all of Buddies symptoms. She said he was very helpful and his verdict was that it was some kind of neurological condition. Impossible to pin point exactly of course given the information……..He also mentioned a minimal pancreatic problem………..The vet went on to say I should keep a diary of his episodes. I told her he had been fine now for over a month …….She said if the episodes became frequent, there was medication that would help ( not cure) but he would need to be treated twice a day for the rest of his life……………Between us we agreed that that would just nor be fair on Buddy, being caught twice a day. She said he may just remain as he is now, so please god he does……….Also to give him vitamins , he has the ones that I put in his water daily…..but are there any supplements I can also give?? He has a good diet but not great with chop….his favourite green is broccoli and basil……… He is very well at the moment and I want to try my best to keep him that way, so any advice is very welcome….

I cannot advise you, Ladybird but I do hope for the best for you and Buddy and that you have many happy years together still to come.

As i think i mentioned earlier on, my little Bertie suffered very similar episodes, the vet likened it to a form of epilepsy, when i first saw how your Buddy was it reminded me of Bertie straight away. I too was offered medication and decided not to go down that route, Bertie was older than Buddy when his started. Sometimes he would go months without an episode sometimes he would have 3 in a week. When i does happen keep him calm and warm in his cage and cover on three sides to cut out too much light until it passes. Its horrible to watch i know

Just to add, the reason I chose not to medicate was because I felt that any stress tended to bring on an episode, catching him to medicate twice a day wasn’t an option for us 🙁

Skysmums when Buddy has an episode , he goes very quiet first, then his wings droop right down and he just doesn’t move. When I put him back in his cage he is wobbly but once in his cage he just sits in one place and usually in a few hours he comes round and is ok., just a bit quieter for the rest of the day. He has had I think 4 episodes and each time he has been playing on my knee………I would definitely notice if he had one in his cage and we don’t go out a lot so he isn’t left for long periods. I wouldn’t like to think I hade to chase and catch him twice a day for the rest of his life . I am hoping things settle down 🙏🏻🙏🏻

I'm glad that vet got back to you and it's good that you know what is going on, even though it isn't something curable. Hopefully Buddy will only have episodes very occasionally. Keeping a diary might help you identify if there is anything particular that triggers an episode and then you might be able to avoid that.

Like others, I hope Buddy's episodes are few and far between. Wishing you both many happy years together.

Keeping his life as calm and stress-free as possible can be very helpful. To add to skysmum’s advice about putting him in his cage and covering etc, I’d add if you have a smaller cage, keep this ready and available, pad the bottom of the cage and lower perches to barely off the floor to lessen the possibility of injury should he lose balance while recovering. Vit B is recommended as a calming influence, and there is a product called B-Calm for birds (there are others for dogs, cats as well) in pellet form. Warning: it isn’t cheap, and I can’t endorse it myself as I’ve not had to rely on it. Some say it works well, others say it does nothing; that’s going to be the case with just about any supplement.

I used to have a small cage just for him, with very low perches and a soft landing, i could pop him in there away from the others when he was having an episode and make it his safe quiet place, i would place him on the floor in a corner until he came out of it, often the first sign he was feeling better was when i could hear him climbing back up to a perch. Useful info re the VitB Hezz , something to pop in the water would be useful instead of the stress of catching and medicating.
