Hi all,
I hope everyone and their buds are well and I'm so sorry for the loooong absence. The human side of life here has been keeping me away from the forum but the buds are all well and Willow (my special boy), Bramble (little sweetheart) and Meadow (the bossiest bud ever) have a new pal......... meet Sorrel!
I wanted to introduce him but also to ask for your advice as he's not well. We collected him a month ago from the animal rescue (he was sent to them after his owner died), their vet had checked him and given the all clear for rehoming but as soon as we got him home and into a quiet room it was clear that he wasn't well. He has a tail bob and a click with each breath and he makes a squeaking noise when stressed or bending forward to preen his abdomen and also when flying (I've included a video which hopefully shows some of this). He also sneezes fairly frequently (far more than the others) but there is no staining above his nares and although he seemed very itchy on his face at first he has since moulted so I think that might have been the cause. Other than this he seems absolutely fine, very perky and calling to the other buds in the next room.
Treatment wise we took him straight to the vets, he weighed in at 36g, they could hear a dorsal air sack wheeze with the stethoscope and prescribed 7 days of Enrofloxacin 0.03ml daily via syringe (that was fun, not). He showed no improvement at all so I jumped on the forum and found your guidance on iodine (thanks Hezz Marianne Marlow and loz). His symptoms seemed to fit an iodine deficiency exactly so we gave him 8 days of Lugols Iodine in his water but again no change at all. We returned to the vets and saw a different vet this time. She prescribed nebulising with a weak F10 solution (1:250 dilution) for 20 mins/day. We've been doing that now for almost 2 weeks but still no change in symptoms. He was treated with S76 (ivermectin in water) as a precaution as soon as we got him and I have also added a pinch of spirulina powder to his food just in case he's low in vitamin A.
We are being extra careful in case it's contagious but he is absolutely desperate to meet the boys and little Bramble spends a lot of time watching him through the glass door which currently separates them. The next steps that the vet was considering were all pretty invasive and involved general anaesthetics for imaging to try to establish if there is a physical cause but I would like to avoid invasive tests if possible. The first vet thought it might be atypical Chlamydia psittaci infection (psittacosis?).
As long as he's not contagious he could join the others but I just can't risk it at the moment. Any advice would be fantastic and apologies again for the long absence - I miss you guys!!!!
