Hi my names Luke, I'm from the North East of England. Not done one of these yet so here we go FOR HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A BIRDKEEPER? Had a budgie as a child although my memories are vague, however in 2009 a neighbour found a budgie in their garden, I offered to take it on and try and find the owner but never did. That kindled my interest big time and since then I've owned a few more. WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO TAKE UP THE HOBBY? Just loved the personality of the bird, they're so friendly and inquisitive, could watch them play for hours. WHAT'S YOUR BEST MEMORY - BIRDKEEPING OR OTHERWISE? Bluey learning a little whistle that I taught him, used to make it whenever I entered the room, so rewarding. ARE YOU WORKING OR RETIRED? WHAT IS/ WAS YOUR JOB? Currently unemployed but looking as best I can, my last job was working in IT repair, lost due to circumstance regarding a driving license but hopefully get back into that field soon. WITH WHICH PERSON, FAMOUS OR OTHERWISE, WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO HAVE DINNER? Stephen Fry probably, the guy is just so funny and it'd be interesting to pick his brain. IF YOU COULD TRAVEL BACK IN TIME, WHERE WOULD YOU GO? I would go back to an early point in my life and not make the mistakes I've made. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY? Everything! Huge house, huge aviary, give some to friends and family, the usual WHAT, IF ANYTHING, WOULD YOU DO TO CHANGE THE FANCY? WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE SHOW? Anything by David Attenborough IF YOU COULD KEEP AN ALTERNATIVE BIRD WHAT WOULD IT BE? I'm leaning towards either a Cockatiel or a Lovebird WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WILD BIRD?. FOR HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A BIRDKEEPER?
Since I collected my first wage packet, more than 50 years ago.
WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO TAKE UP THE HOBBY?
The eldest of 12 children, I guess I’d been brought up to nurture the small and vulnerable; and the birdroom provided my own little oasis of calm!
WHAT'S YOUR BEST MEMORY - BIRDKEEPING OR OTHERWISE?
It’s hard to beat the thrill of that moment when, for the first time ever, you see the words “Best In Show” beside your bird.
ARE YOU WORKING OR RETIRED? WHAT IS/ WAS YOUR JOB?
My last working years were as manager of a Builders’ Merchants. I gratefully retired 3 years ago.
WITH WHICH PERSON, FAMOUS OR OTHERWISE, WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO HAVE DINNER?
Sir Alex Ferguson – not because I am particularly a Man U fan, but because of my admiration for a contemporary from humble beginnings who has developed, over his career, quite remarkable management skills. A man of personal integrity who commands respect from players, peers and supporters, his well-deserved success is testimony to his abilities to recognise individual talent and channel it to the best advantage of the team. Just talk, Fergie, and I’ll listen and learn.
IF YOU COULD TRAVEL BACK IN TIME, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?
I would choose to journey to Australia with Charles Darwin in the 1800’s to be a party to his charting of the hitherto unknown species, the study of which formed a significant part of his theory of evolution. Or, if I had to confine my time travel to the 20th century, I would make sure that I was Sir David Attenborough’s first choice of travel companion during his filming of the “Life” TV series.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY?
Buy a huge wooded area and create a safe, sustainable site, incorporating various micro-environments, where endangered avian species might be encouraged to breed before being reintroduced into areas of their own natural habitat.
WHAT, IF ANYTHING, WOULD YOU DO TO CHANGE THE FANCY?
Competition between breeders is natural and necessary, but I would like, somehow, to level the playing field so that research, knowledge and expertise about breeding and exhibiting matters more than how much you can afford to spend.
Also, I would like to see a greater sharing of information, and respect for the ideas of others. It is damaging to the fancy in general if somebody is disparaging about the opinions and efforts of others.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE SHOW?
As a Budgerigar man, I am bound to say the Annual World Show in Doncaster for the chance it provides to see the best and catch up with fellow fanciers. I’m also quite fond of a good musical.
IF YOU COULD KEEP AN ALTERNATIVE BIRD WHAT WOULD IT BE?
The Superb Starling, otherwise known as the Spreo Starling, (Lamprotornis superbus,) that has its origins in East Africa. Superb by name and truly superb by nature. This choice reflects my flamboyant side! Spreo is a Dandy and he’ll boast to you with several songs, in his splendid adult livery of iridescent blue-green back, upper breast, wings, and tail. His belly is red-orange, separated from the blue breast by a white bar. And those white eyes in his black mask gives him an imperious, if somewhat comical appearance.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WILD BIRD?
The Goldfinch because to see the wave pattern of his undulating flight and the brief spark of his red face and yellow flashes never fails to lift my spirits
DO YOU READ ANY NATIONAL/LOCAL NEWSPAPER OR MAGAZINE?
It’s a matter of record, and no small amount of leg-pulling, that I ritually buy the Whitehaven News, (or “Marra’s Gazette” as it’s known locally) as soon as it’s on sale on a Thursday morning.
WHAT'S YOUR ALTERNATIVE HOBBY?
Increasingly it’s photography and the development and maintenance of my website.
IS THERE ANYTHING THAT REALLY IRRITATES YOU?
The way our local clubs are dying out. We are being short-sighted in allowing this to happen. We should be getting involved – really rolling our sleeves up, because once they are gone they will be all but impossible to reconstitute, and yet they are our best opportunity to access support and information and to share resources.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION?
I’ll tell you that once I’ve been everywhere I want to go.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE TV PROGRAMME?
To be honest I really don’t watch much TV.
WHAT WAS THE LAST FILM YOU SAW?
“I Am Legend” – Will Smith. I was quite surprised how much I enjoyed it.
ANY FAVOURITE MUSIC?
The music of the 70’s takes me right back. Happy days!
YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD?
Call me old-fashioned, but it’s hard to beat a home-made shepherd’s pie or Sunday roast.
FAVOURITE DRINK?
Hmm. Difficult. Depending on the occasion, a cup of English Breakfast tea or a pint of John Smith’s.
WHAT DO YOU DRIVE?
A Seat Leon and, (according to her,) my wife mad!

FOR HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A BIRDKEEPER? Nat
12 years
WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO TAKE UP THE HOBBY?
concussion (and I'm not joking)
WHAT'S YOUR BEST MEMORY - BIRDKEEPING OR OTHERWISE?
many, but generally just seeing chicks grow up and join the aviary and act like divvy things when they meet all the other birds
ARE YOU WORKING OR RETIRED? WHAT IS/ WAS YOUR JOB?
Working as a racehorse rider and groom
WITH WHICH PERSON, FAMOUS OR OTHERWISE, WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO HAVE DINNER?
The Dalai Lama
IF YOU COULD TRAVEL BACK IN TIME, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?
I would love to be in any place in countryside in the UK 1000 years ago just to see how the UK countryside flora and fauna was until we started wrecking it.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY?
I would buy a large amount of land with woods and have an animal sanctuary for predominantly birds of the parrot kind, but also other unwanted pets within reason. No tigers, crocodiles etc
WHAT, IF ANYTHING, WOULD YOU DO TO CHANGE THE FANCY?
Barries idea of volunteer mentoring is a very good one
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SHOW?
I've never been to a show
IF YOU COULD KEEP AN ALTERNATIVE BIRD WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Other than budgies I don't think I'll ever be without a hahns macaw. Noisy, but wonderful birds
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WILD BIRD?
Difficult question. I haven't a favourite really, but I do love the robin. We had robins nesting for several years in the same place at work and the father taught all the chicks to come and feed from the horses feed room. They were very tame and unbelievably intellegent. I spent alot of time rescuing fledgelings from the hands of our Brazilian lads at work that wanted to take them home and put them in a cage!
DO YOU READ ANY NATIONAL/LOCAL NEWSPAPER OR MAGAZINE?
No, to start the day with a newspaper is far too depressing. Instead I listen to radio 4 news later in the day when I have already been made depressed by the numptys I work with;)
WHAT'S YOUR ALTERNATIVE HOBBY?
Growing veg/flowers and reading. I used to be a long distance runner but injury stopped that.
IS THERE ANYTHING THAT REALLY IRRITATES YOU?
People who drive like ninnies! The light changes to green and they sit there for 3 seconds. No wonder there is conjestion when they leave GAPS! People like this should be sent on a driving course in Rome. They'd soon learn that hesitation gets you nowhere and possibly will get your car bumped;)
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION?
Sardinia. I hate nightclubs, but in sardinia they have punk/metal ones. Now thats a different matter;)
WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE TV PROGRAMME?
I only watch eastenders and nature stuff otherwise the TV is off
WHAT WAS THE LAST FILM YOU SAW?
I have never had the patience to sit through a whole film unless its a western
ANY FAVOURITE MUSIC?
David Bowie and any heavy rock stuff from the 70s with plenty of guitar. Especially sabbath, and on mellower days I like some blues especially John Lee Hooker. I have also been listening alot to Petru Guelfucci from Corsica. Don't understand the lyrics though which is probably just as well
YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD?
Anything heavily laden with vegatables, garlic, ginger, fish and curry but always vegetarian other than the fish bit!
FAVOURITE DRINK?
Black earl grey sugarless tea and green tea for non alcohol. Strongbow for summer alcohol, calsburg or guiness for winter

A 12 year old ford fiesta van

Here's mine ~ FOR HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A BIRDKEEPER?
Since august 2009, My auntie got a budgie earlier in the year, and it reminded me of the ones i had when i was a "tot". I wanted one every since that moment, it wasn't until august that i got that chance. WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO TAKE UP THE HOBBY?
Not sure really, just my own spark . WHAT'S YOUR BEST MEMORY - BIRDKEEPING OR OTHERWISE?
The first chick i managed to breed. It sadly died soon after hatching, but it drove me on. And made me want to continue. ARE YOU WORKING OR RETIRED? WHAT IS/ WAS YOUR JOB?
Im in education........ lucky me eh? . WITH WHICH PERSON, FAMOUS OR OTHERWISE, WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO HAVE DINNER?
My sadly deceased father. IF YOU COULD TRAVEL BACK IN TIME, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?
The age of sabre tooth cats, and giant sloths, what a marvelous world. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY?
Buy a huge wooded area and create a safe, sustainable site, incorporating various micro-environments, where endangered species could be encouraged to breed before being reintroduced into areas of their own natural habitat. (originally by Barrie shutt, but i like and agree with his thinking I'd also love to obtain aviary. It's been a long held goal for me. WHAT, IF ANYTHING, WOULD YOU DO TO CHANGE THE FANCY?
I would change the somewhat "goal" for bigger stockier budgies. To small, agile ,more healthy birds, more like their wild form. Today's budgerigars are not personally my vision of beauty. WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE SHOW?
I have no interest in budgie shows. IF YOU COULD KEEP AN ALTERNATIVE BIRD WHAT WOULD IT BE?
The Galah. a Truly stunning bird with a nice mix of colour. Not only that but it's extremely intelligent. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WILD BIRD?
This is a hard one for me, but i think i would have to go for the Swift ,It's call signals the begging of summer for me. The fact they stay in the air their whole life (except when breeding) amazes me. I love their aerial displays. DO YOU READ ANY NATIONAL/LOCAL NEWSPAPER OR MAGAZINE?
Not really, but i am starting to consider obtaining the cage and aviary WHAT'S YOUR ALTERNATIVE HOBBY?
Computing and photography, are on the increase for me, but it's hard to do on a limited budget!. IS THERE ANYTHING THAT REALLY IRRITATES YOU?
Chavs and just general "hard men" , most people seem to be carrying knives or breaking into homes, take a look at the London riots, especially kids throwing rocks ,snow balls water balloons at cars or houses just for a "laugh". Drunks and druggies get up my nose aswell. The attitude the police have is rubbish they have no power any more. it's a disgrace if you ask me. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION?
Iv'e never been on holiday before . I would love to go to the highlands one day though. WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE TV PROGRAMME?
Primeval ,quite good but it's not on often. WHAT WAS THE LAST FILM YOU SAW?
Shaun of the Dead, great film, i like most of the films Pegg and Frost have done their good actors. ANY FAVOURITE MUSIC?
Living colour ~ Cult of personality, Skillet etc etc. YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD?
Chicken tikka strips, mmmmmm lovely . FAVOURITE DRINK?
Cherryade or Irn Bru WHAT DO YOU DRIVE?

Hi... My username is Learner and I live near the south coast of Sussex, UK. Pleased to be joining you.... Hope you feel the same way once I start asking questions. Introducing myself the standard way: FOR HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A BIRDKEEPER?I kept finches, a few budgies and cockatiels as a teenager more than 40 years ago. WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO TAKE UP THE HOBBY?My family decided I needed an interest so encouraged me to start up again as I rarely have time / energy to go far from home or do anything very much for myself. WHAT'S YOUR BEST MEMORY - BIRDKEEPING OR OTHERWISE? Otherwise – the birth of my two children… just has to come first!! As a bird keeper my best memory would be “Fred” my Greater Hill Myna – he was amazing! I also fondly recall seeing my first clutch of baby budgies toddling about while their nest box was cleaned. It just has to be seeing new life….the baby finches and cockatiels were amazing too. ARE YOU WORKING OR RETIRED? WHAT IS/ WAS YOUR JOB?I retired early from teaching about three years ago to care for my parents – working full-time and caring was not possible on a long term basis. WITH WHICH PERSON, FAMOUS OR OTHERWISE, WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO HAVE DINNER? My wife always. IF YOU COULD TRAVEL BACK IN TIME, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?Back to 1950s London and my early childhood with the knowledge I have now. I’d make a few changes (perhaps). WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY?Keep very quiet and think very carefully……. Aim to share and make use of it for people who deserve better, consider a new home for my family….but £10 doesn’t go far does it!! WHAT, IF ANYTHING, WOULD YOU DO TO CHANGE THE FANCY?It would be good to see more people involved locally as there were when I was a kid. It seems our local Caged Bird Society has folded. WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE SHOW?Show? Bird show? I last went to a locally held one in the late 80s. IF YOU COULD KEEP AN ALTERNATIVE BIRD WHAT WOULD IT BE?I love the little zebra finch as it was the first bird I kept. A lottery win and a large planted aviary with heated indoor winter housing for foreign finches would be wonderful…as a pipe-dream. Our local pet shop had a beautiful, calm and seemingly canny parrot for re-homing / sale the other day – he was gorgeous! WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WILD BIRD?Kingfisher.... rarely see them though. DO YOU READ ANY NATIONAL/LOCAL NEWSPAPER OR MAGAZINE? Local weekly news when / if I get time. WHAT'S YOUR ALTERNATIVE HOBBY?My allotment……but having the time to go there has been very difficult this year especially with such wet weather. IS THERE ANYTHING THAT REALLY IRRITATES YOU?Bad manners, traffic, selfishness. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION?Past holidays: anywhere quiet in the UK, away from bustling crowds and noisy traffic. Abroad: Southern Italy and coastal Ireland. WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE TV PROGRAMME? “New Tricks” as the humour and character interaction makes each episode additionally enjoyable. Reading (when I get the chance) Sci-fi but not fantasy WHAT WAS THE LAST FILM YOU SAW?Cinema trip? Heaven knows… science-fiction I expect but it was more than 2 years ago when I went with my daughter. ANY FAVOURITE MUSIC?Loads and very varied including classical, classical guitar, folk and main stream. YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD?Almost anything cooked with care but something I’ve grown myself always seems to taste better. FAVOURITE DRINK?Strong coffee or tea and the once in a while single malt whisky as well as a draught Guinness on holiday every few years. WHAT DO YOU DRIVE?People round the bend......... Often. I chose not to drive around 40 years ago although enjoyed driving when I did before then. I walk, cycle or use public transport.

I'm Daz (Darren) from DazandLoz
FOR HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A BIRDKEEPER? Since February 2014, so only a newbie in that sense, but had budgies and canaries when I was child.
WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO TAKE UP THE HOBBY? Depression! Needed something to divert my mind, and originally we thought of Lovebirds but chose a budgie, which we named Charlie, and we still have him.
WHAT'S YOUR BEST MEMORY - BIRDKEEPING OR OTHERWISE? Any quality time spent with my wife. Must say that first! Second, my first attempts at breeding budgies. I currently have two chicks aged 10 and 5 days old, both doing well.
ARE YOU WORKING OR RETIRED? WHAT IS/ WAS YOUR JOB? Been a police officer for 19 years now, seen a lot of changes, most for the worst IMO. Job is getting harder due to fewer officers, battling against bureaucracy, the courts and lenient sentencing. I retire in 9 years.
WITH WHICH PERSON, FAMOUS OR OTHERWISE, WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO HAVE DINNER? This is actually quite a difficult question; any one of my family who have passed away, just to spend one more time with them.
IF YOU COULD TRAVEL BACK IN TIME, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?
I would go back and stop my sister marrying that monster of a man so she would still be with us today and be safe.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY? RETIRE!!!!!!
WHAT, IF ANYTHING, WOULD YOU DO TO CHANGE THE FANCY? I don't know enough about them I'm afraid, which when I was a child I only ever saw wild type blue and green budgies as pets. Now they seem so huge and puffed out in size, IMO they don't look right. I like the different colour mutations now, just not the size and long feathers.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE SHOW? Never been to any, but would like to go so that I can learn more about them and perhaps my opinions regarding the above entry may change.
IF YOU COULD KEEP AN ALTERNATIVE BIRD WHAT WOULD IT BE? Funny you should ask...... I now have a spare aviary and was thinking of Finches or Tits
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WILD BIRD?. Robins! They are just so cheeky and brave. I also like the majesty of prey birds.
DO YOU READ ANY NATIONAL/LOCAL NEWSPAPER OR MAGAZINE? I do not read any newspaper whatsoever, they are not like they used to be when they actually reported worthy news. Now all they print is absolute rubbish, lies, their own opinions, and fail to report what is real news. When you see that some celeb has lost 10 stone using a new fad diet on the first few pages, and then back at page 30 some vile creature has killed or seriously wounded a child or other vulnerable person, it kind of shows how the editors think what really is news and what sells their grubby paper. Don't get me started on who funds them!
WHAT'S YOUR ALTERNATIVE HOBBY? I have several. I play electric and acoustic guitar. I do all types of fishing but mostly carp fishing, I just took up cycling to try and increase my fitness, I enjoy woodworking and restoring or repairing things in my own workshop. I also build large scale radio controlled planes, mostly scratch built from 3-view drawings where I then have to draw up my own actual build plans before making the model. I am currently having a break from this as I have run out of space!
IS THERE ANYTHING THAT REALLY IRRITATES YOU? Just a few, lol Incompetence, laziness, and ignorance. I especially dislike thieves and people that assault others. Even more so I especially hate those that commit domestic violence and crimes against children.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION? Cornwall. We used to go there twice a year as children with mum and dad, usually to Hayle, near St. Ives. What a gorgeous place. Now the resting place for my dear sister, and I know why she chose it. The wife and I have a touring caravan and go to a small very quiet site in Dorset, with absolutely no entertainment whatsoever apart from the countryside, and has just electric hook-up and water. Our dogs love roaming the fields that surround the site, and we spend hours walking, taking a picnic, and just relaxing in the peace and quiet.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE TV PROGRAMME? I don't watch a great deal of TV, but if I was to, it would be something normally on the Discovery channels, or the science and nature channels. I don't do fiction in either TV or books, only fact.
WHAT WAS THE LAST FILM YOU SAW? Here is where I become hypocritical of the above. I do love a good horror which has a meaning, like the SAW films. However I then spend my time working out how to escape the contraptions that were made, or just shout at the screen "DON'T DO IT!" I also like a good modern thriller. Unfortunately for my wife, I tend to work out who the culprit is first. I suppose that's my experience in the police. Fave all time film - Quadrophenia.
ANY FAVOURITE MUSIC? Mod music, I am a big Mod fan. I love The Who and the 60's. Until recently I owned a Series 3 LI150 Lambretta with all of the chrome mirrors and lights, obligatory fox tail (fake) on a tall springy whip aerial at the back. My wife bought the scooter for me and after I seized the engine I decide to have a full restoration done on it. I also have a lot of Mod clothing, inc 2 original US Army Parkas, 3-button tailored suits, tassel loafers, and button down shirts. Got to look the part, be the Ace Face.
YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD? Originally I trained as a chef in the Royal Navy when I left school. I enjoy cooking, but I find the simple foods to be the best.
FAVOURITE DRINK? Tea, tea, tea, and some more tea! Very rarely drink alcohol.
WHAT DO YOU DRIVE? A Jaguar.
