Hi all When cleaning the aviary today I had a go at candling the eggs. I only candled 2 of them and as I didn't mark them I didin't know which ones they were, but they are all 9 days and older. The 2 I candled aren't fertile which I was a bit disappointed about. I don't think the others will be fertile either But there is still a chance that the other 3 might be Nicola

Hi BB and others! Just a question, when Lilly came out of the nest for a break today, Georgia (her daughter, who also has a box and has made a nest but hasn't laid or paired up yet) went in Lilly's box so fast when I called her name that I suspect that she has been in there while I was away. I want to remove her as when Lilly went back in there again, and poked her head out, Georgia attacked her head in a way Please! What should I do!!! Nicola

But sometimes the candling doesn't show that. It sometimes happens to experienced breeders as well. So just leave them as you never know there maybe a surprise.

And 1 other thing, because they are in an aviary would I have to put Georgia near them? Nicola

Most would take such a bird inside but they can feel lonely and become stressed.

Hi again BB. I haven't taken Georgia out yet. It is a last resort. Yesterday, my mum saw Georgia go into Lilly's box again. Is it possible that because they are related (mother and daughter) that she is curious and just wants to help? But if that is the reason, why does she try to attack Lilly when Lilly tries to get back in the box?

Same parents who raise the chicks for over a month, will attack them after that period so they leave and we have to shift them to other cages. Same is the case in the wild. However I do know that at two occasions, two sisters raised the clutch together. But there is over 30 years gap between two incidents. In colony breeding some hens will be just nosey whereas some will be violent and attack other hens, eggs and chicks. But there will always be trouble maker hen.
