Just got back from the vets. Ruby isn't using her left leg at all. The right leg grips my finger, but the left doesn't react and stays open. The vet said she could have some spinal nerve damage, which is probably permanent. She's given me some anti-inflammatories to give to Ruby for a week, just in case. If that doesn't work, I have to assess her quality of life... Thanks for the advice and best wishes. I'll keep you all posted! Im having a similar time with my german shepard. Only she screams out in pain when she tries to jump onto things etc . The medicine has helped dramatically though. I hope your ruby recovers, or atleast gets a little better .

Poor Ruby! Hope this isn't a permanent thing, Starling, and Ruby regains the use of her leg. Sending positive thoughts your way!

I have moved everything in the cage down to the bottom (perches, food etc.). It was quite a drop before, plus a climb back up. My other birds are quite confused! I think a couple of them spent the night clinging to the top of the cage! I'm not feeling very hopeful for Ruby. I think her wing is damaged too as she looks lop-sided and can't fly. She was climbing around the cage ok last night, but can't get from the cage to the play tree without me. I think i'll have a horrible decision to make next week It's so annoying as she is otherwise healthy. The same thing happened to my 13 year old budgie years ago, who broke her leg. Thank you all for the positive thoughts!

She was put to sleep a few hours ago She was getting stressed being handled all the time. She wouldn't put her foot down at all today and was clinging to the bars with her beak for support. She just looked tired so I had to let her go

Thanks guys. I'll make a proper thread for her tomorrow. Not feeling up to it tonight. She's the first of my flock of 5 to die and I'm not taking it too well.

So sorry, Starling! I am sure you have done the right thing for your little Ruby. Of course you are feeling cut up.

Rest in Peace, sweet Ruby. Starling, you did what was best for her, and you did it out of love. Now she is flying high and free from pain.

Starling I am so very sorry.
Your tribute in Fields of Millet is just lovely but i wanted to reply here too.
She knew you loved her and you did the best thing. Beautiful Ruby - fly free and happy little lady xxx
PS - the photo of her up to her head in the grass really made me smile :-)
