oh my gosh! what is French Moult? maz7 www.auspigeonco.com.au/Articles/french_moult.htmlI've never seen French moult except on web sites but it gives the bird a poor feather quality and this site says it's caused by a virus. Sometimes you will see birds with no tail feathers and their owners say they have this.

Re mites; my daughter bought me a home made cage of some sort and it was made up out of conti-wood, [ she thought she was being helpful ! ] now I know why cages should be metal and plastic.
My poor birds [ two together ! ] showed signs of this infestation. Luckily I was on the case right away but to cut a long story short they were hiding in the wood and coming out at night. I treated home and birds and it all came to the fore; within a week. I destroyed the cage. On asking my daughter where she got it she said on a well known site which you can buy and sell for in your own city or area. I am saying no more but I wish I had contacted the site and told them not to allow these being sold. I very much doubt it was a ' one of ' .
Mites are akin to us getting fleas, they will bloodsuck your pet and cause real harm, distress and even danger to them if not treated drastically, firmly and most importantly quickly. It is very upsetting to see your pet in obvious discomfort.
My way of treating mites is to clear out the cage, totally submerge the cage in the bath, using a little bleach. Let it sit a couple of hours, drain off and most importantly really, really rinse thoroughly. Also all items within the cage goes in at the same time too. Do not forget any covers you may use to let your pets rest as they will be hiding in there also.
Obviously you treat your pet too and all should be well, if necessary, in that the pet perhaps still had a few mites, repeat.
I have only had this problem once in over 20 years and the above worked a treat.
Moral of this story, wood is not ideal as there are too many little nooks the mites can hide in.

So with any thing like lice fleas or mites, your birds will be scratching lots? I think there was a tiny bug in one of my finch nests (maybe lice?) so I put some neem stuff in there and hopefully it did the trick if there was anything. However my birds have not been scratching or itching at all.
