Hi They do from where I'm sitting. To candle an egg. Balance it on an upturned lit torch & you will be able to see veins growing from the dark heart spot after the egg is 3to4 days old. Yours B.J.

i cant tell from these pics ... try candling them that will be the best way to tell... i hope they are .... ... i found this ...i hope it helps you ... Candling Eggs: Eggs can be candled when they are 4 or 5 days old. All you need is to buy a small penlight flashlight like a Mag light or any small bright flashlight. Hold the egg in front of you (about 1 foot or so away at your eye height) and hold the flashlight very close behind the egg so you are looking through the egg with the flashlight pointing towards you and you should be able to see red veins on the inside of the shell and a small dark spot which will be the embryo. If the egg is clear through it is probably not fertile. You can also tell by the egg color as fertile eggs well be bright white while infertile will be a dull white. If you do not see the lines (veins) or dark spot inside after 10 days you can probably throw them out. Before you open any nest box to remove or check the eggs you should always tap on the box door lightly so the hen expects you and you do not frighten her and possibly have her trample the eggs. In time the hen will know it is you and get out of the nest box for you. You can then take an egg and candle it to see if it is fertile. Do not do this too often and never shake the eggs. Sometimes the hen will wait a few days before sitting on them so the 10th day is the safest time to say whether they are OK or not.

The shells of the fertile eggs become very white. But it usually takes more than a week for this to be noticeable.
Usually we can tell if the first egg is fertile or not by the time the fourth egg is laid, that too if the hen started to incubate from first egg.
You can candle the eggs either by holding them against the light, or by putting a pointed torch light against them while the eggs are in the concave of the best box.

I prefer to candle the eggs this way. You can see the red veins / blood vessel developing here.

I avoid touching eggs and don't like to candle them this way.

Here is the candler which is best for candling eggs in the nest box.

A basic like this one would work too. Just that the light has to be pointed and strong.

It should work if it is bright enough. You will know when you use it.

Just a note of caution. A tortoise friend of mine was candling her eggs and dropped the torch breaking an egg, she managed to hatch it by patching it with chicken egg shell thankfully, but I wouldn't want it to happen to anyone.

That's why handling the eggs is not advised.

Sorry I just realized that I bumped an old topic.
