This look like a beautiful cage I expected that you would choose something like this. I have this cage only in grey. Its fantastic cage although I put newspaper on top of the grate to save me having tohaul out the grate every few days to wash it off. It does mean however that everytime one of the budgies lands on the newspaper they send a cascade of seed onto the floor

The hagen cages does look a good cage to be used. Will have to have a good think about new cages and stands.
I had a thought about the holidays, maybe we could use the old cage for when she is at other peoples houses, or maybe not.

I saw a great cage that someone had made. They bought a really big old sideboard at the charity shop for $150. They cut the inside sections of the doors and the two sides at the top out, to make a frame, and then filled them in with wire. Then they just lined the bottom with newspapers, as there was no pull out drawer base.
The bottom also had doors, which they left as is to use for seed and accessory storage.
It was brilliant - and huge. Only problem is that is wasn't portable like a cage.

Marianne, if you make a weekly visit to ebay, you may find a really good second hand cage close by. It might take a while, but all it takes is 30 mins, once a week to check on the listings.

Mine is the same as Rachael's. It is a great cage and not too expensive. Adding the "skirt" to it to reduce the mess adds about half as much again to the price - go figure. It is the millet husks and grass seed husks that land every where that are the big nuisance. If someone comes up with a way to feed millet to budgies without the mess, please oh please let me in on the secret! It is so easy to clean - I too use newspaper over the grate, but a budgie flying from perch to perch down low stirs up the seed husks anyway, with or without the paper. Beth, a small cage is a good thing to have handy anyway, as you say for holidays but also those terrible vet visits, or a poorly bird - a small cage is easier to wrap up and keep warm than a large one.

I always put the millet in the centre of the cage. Seems to keep the mess at bay.

The millet in billie's cage is near to the centre as possible. Still gets the floor messy, espeically this morning after fixing one of the lower perches that fell off at one side. Explains why she was very noisy this morning, must have been telling me that the perch needed fixing.
Had a look/ring around the local pet shop up the hill does not sell cages. So that leaves the main store pet shops. Shop one only sells the Hagen double height cages not the single height. But the other shop sells single high but is way too expensive considering you can get the double height cage and stand for the same price. Not yet tired the pet shops in the nearby city. No one seems to sell the other cage I was looking at.
Oh speak of the devil shes screaming again oh and now singing lol.

I'd buy the hagen online if you are going to get it. It's much cheaper than in a pet shop.

Doorways can definitely be an issue for birds, and the smaller the door, the worse it could be. My very first cage had a tiny little door, and my very first Budgie, Bluey just got used to it as he was only young. The next cage I got for him had a great big door - most of the front of the cage and after being in there for a while trying to put him in through the little door of the first cage was a bit of a struggle as he always fly off when we approached that little opening.
