What is crop milk? Crop milk is a secretion of the cells lining the crop and is used to feed budgerigar chicks
Why is it important that the chick is fed crop milk?
Antibodies pass via the crop milk to the baby budgerigar after it has hatched; this helps the chick build up an immune system
My chick is squashed ………A flattened chick will rarely be caused by the hen. Flattened chicks have more often died from another cause.
My chick has a yellow stomach This is the yolk sac that the chick has not completely absorbed; once this is absorbed the hen will start feeding crop milk to the chick.
My new chicks crop is empty…...Maiden hens often do not know how to feed a newborn chick. Use a teaspoon and some tepid milk and just hold it up level with the chicks beak, it will drink.
My hen is out of breeding condition , will she feed her chicks correctly? Do keep your eyes on all breeding birds with emphasis on their condition and foster chicks if necessary.
The maiden hen is still not feeding her new chicks. Give her a three day old chick from another nest, it will shout and the hen will feed it, this will be all she needs to get her started.
Another flattened chick.
This could be because the chick was a weakling at birth; this may be due to a genetic fault. Repairing the adults with different partners should eliminate any more weak chicks
Splayed legs in chicks, would this defect most likely occur when the nest boxes are plastic or perspex, due to the slippery nature of that material? This is true as the chicks need something underfoot to push up on, shavings will help prevent the problem.
What is the incubation period of a budgie egg ?
The incubation period is 17 to 20 days depending on the temperature and humidity of the birdroom What is humidity ?
Humidity is the moisture content in the air , the ideal humidity is 50%
Will low humidity affect the eggs ?
It will make hatching difficult for some chicks
I am experiencing lots of deaths in my birdroom, can you help ?
Remove all the supplements you normally feed your birds, add vitamin D3 to your birds diet, do not expect immediate results as the benifits will not be seen for several months, believe me it works.
Will the breeding room temperature affect the eggs ?
Yes it will , a warm birdroom will make the embryo grow faster and a cold breeding room will make the embryo grow slowly
Why are my chicks dying before the hatch date ?
This problem occurs just before the hatch is due and is the crucial period between living in the egg to living outside. The chick may have problems absorbing the yolk sac, pipping out of the shell or breathing in the air
How sensitive are breeding hens?
A breeding hen has such a well developed sense of feeling she can tell when the embryo moving and the chick attempting to hatch

some very interesting points eggs are something I have experience on big time a lot of artificially incubated eggs ghave problems and egg is and egg whatever species people dont always realise that pathogens can cross over from one egg to another salmonella for one is known to cross from egg to egg causing dead in shell at various poits in the incubation cycle
