BB, for skewers, I use bamboo skewers - the sort you use for kebabs, satay sticks, etc, which I can get at my local supermarket, about 100 of them for $3-4. I cut the very sharp point off them with a pair of scissors and hang them on the cage by a clothes peg. This way you have a throw-away item, costs next to nothing, and the birds often chew on the sticks as well as the veggies.

And they are easy enough to clean if you do want to recycle them. I usually use mine a few times (depending on the "chew" factor) with a wash inbetween and then toss away.
