Lemons are actually okay to feed. One of the breeders on the Australian forum feeds her flock all types of citrus fruit – lemons, oranges, grapefruit, mandarins, limes.
In moderation though, once a week, or every two weeks or so.
There's some talk citrus might lessen the chance of getting megabacteria in an aviary. I can't vouch for that though.

Iv'e heard it raises the acidity level in the water making it inhospitable to certain bacteria (maybe why you heard it might lessen mega bac). Just to keep their water that little bit more fresh .

Adding a little squeeze in their water would be fine.
However, don't rely on this to not always change their water every day, and whenever it gets poop in it.

lol, oh no now I don't know if I can trust the book anymore then the petstore people. Is it a common misbelieve? I see it posted on various places that lemons are a no no A lot of the information you'll find online and from petstores is wrong. But not all. It then gets passed around, until it becomes like an urban myth. It pays to take note of it, until you find out more. I trust those breeders who have kept many budgies over many years, or a good avian vet (not normal vet). If you have any doubts, use your own common sense and don't feed it, use it, or do it, - whatever the thing is you're uncertain about. Say with the lemon. It's not an essential, so if you have concerns or doubt - just don't give it to them. It may be that it's not good for them in large quantities. Anything you give them should be given in moderation. Which book have you got?

In our other forum, we had a great section on diet, amassed over many years. All gone now.
One of the former members had a great site on diet. I'll see if I can find you a link and get back to you.

This is the site on some good food for your budgies. It includes wild grasses that are good for them. It's by a Czech guy, and he hasn't translated all the pages into English. But the diet section is. www.adnort.webs.com/My_html_Cookery_BookE.htmlAccording to my avian vet, the best most vitamin rich fruit and veges to feed (aside from quality seed) are; Carrot, Sweet potato Butternut pumpkin Corn Peas Leafy greens - like spinach or Asian greens like Bok Choy or Asian broccoli. Raw beetroot Grapefruit Rockmelon Mango Kiwifruit Pomegranate (never tried this one myself) You can feed other more "wet' veges (like lettuce) but they do tend to make their poops go sloppy, and they don't have as many nutrients in them, so what's the point. The very dark lettuces (like those Italian style ones - Romaine etc) are much better. Read more: budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=blogs&action=display&thread=268&page=2#ixzz1aibW1ZKg
