Our boy Henry seems to have been in a spot of bother yesterday.....we went out for a walk in the morning and when we came home in the afternoon.....I went to check the quails as I had noticed that they had not eaten their veggies that I had left outside.....the wood shaving in the inside flight looked like red cedar shaving which I don't use....then it clicked that it was blood.....now Hilda was all over the place meeping and I could not find Henry.....Henry came out of his favorite box and one side of his head was covered in blood....Gaz and I both checked the outside flight and found a large pool of blood behind the birdbath and little bloody foot prints going back into the inside flight....the avairy is double meshed and we checked the under side of the birdbath for blood as I thought maybe something had scared him and he cut his head that way....Gaz has thought that maybe Hilda attacked him....could this be possible.....I checked on them several times last night and this morning all seems to be fine and they are not out of each other's sight....and Henry is eating both his food and veggies this morning....
Thought one: Hilda attacked him
Thought two: a cat managed to get its claws through the double mesh and cut Henry
And now I am worried about putting the budgies back in the avairy because I can not work out what happened to Henry.....

Also....we have not caught Henry because we are worried about putting under more stress when we found him.....I might try today to have a look at his wound.....what would be the best to clean it with if this is needed.....will try to post pictures after I charge the battery for the camera.....

A little dettol in the water won't harm a bird, or otherwise make it a saline solution - about 8 grams of salt to a litre of water. Heat to dissolve the salt and cool. I hope you are able to work out what has caused poor Henry's injury. Update us when you do know.

Thank you Hezz.....I may try this evening to get Henry the once over.....it is too hot here at the moment to be playing "catch the quail".....but he has come up to me today and given my finger a little nibble....he mistook it for his lettuce....so he seems to be ok.....

Poor Henry i would say ( but im not a quail expert ) that Hilda has been naughty . If nothing can get to them and there is nothing that they can hurt themselves on i think Hilda is to blame. I have a friend who used to keep quails and they were quite aggressive to each other and the wounds were usually around the eye and neck area sorry, i maybe wrong.

Henry is doing well and has met me this morning with that age old question of "where is my water cress".....I did not want to believe that Hilda could have attacked him.....but that is looking more like what has happened.....they do play tug of war with their veggies and maybe this got out of hand.....but Henry seems to have forgiven Hilda as they still sleep "top to tail" and call for each other when they are out of sight of each other.....

Glad Henry is looking and feeling better, Kath. I hope Hilda hasn't been snipey with him, maybe you will have to try to keep an eye on them.

I've found my cpqs are quite capable of totaly random violence towards each other for no apparent reason! If there is another attack in the future and there is fresh blood on the bird its pretty important to isolate the bird until the wound has healed as quail just can't help themselves picking at a wound of another. One of my hens completely scalped another hen last week:O I didn't think she'd survive as she was in enormous shock at the time and thought I might have to have her pts, but shes made it and the wound is healing well. Quail seem to be very brutal at times, but what would kill another type of bird they just seem to shrug off!

Our boy Henry is well and only has a small scar.....he and Hilda are both dealing with the eggs in a great fashion.....however I have noticed that if Hilda is out and Henry comes out for a moment she seems to cow down to him.....not sure why....
