Hi, our best cock bird who has not long finished breeding and recovering from a major moult has what looks like a severe feather cyst on his wing. Is this dangerous/life threatening or is there something I can do about it . We had really hi hopes for him in the upcoming breeding season. Thanks Paul.

Barrie will be able to help you on this. PM him the link if he doesn't spot this post.
Hope your cock is OK.

You need an expert to tell you what to do. They excise it somehow, getting the gunk out. But they often continually reoccur. A vet will cut it out, and I know Barrie has done this himself.

Hi Nipper
if it is really a cyst it should be treated. The cyst has to by open (a vet will insert a needle into the cyst) and drain. There is blood and pus in the cyst. Untreated cyst can bleed or cause blood poisoning. I would not dare to do such an intervention by myself. I would rather visit an avian vet. Ales

quick update. i caught him to examine closer and as soon as i applied the slightest pressure to the cyst , it burst and without much disscomfort to the bird i managed to release all the gunk and clean up with antiseptic wipes . that was a few days ago so far so good ,he seems happy at the moment. thanks for the replies

It can be a bad sight when the birds are left with these cysts, you did the right thing by bursting itnow.

From my understanding you really need to have the cyst dealt with (probably excised) by a vet and there really should be some sort of antibiotic powder applied to the cavity. And if this isn't done the cyst will return with more frequency. Please take your cock to a vet.

I don't think they return that quickly, Paul, but good luck with it all. Lets hope it never does!

I remove them Paul, open them up , squeeze out the keratin / pus , i then remove the empty outer cyst , apply an avian disinfectant to the wound and yes they may fill up again but they do breed okay after removal.
