Had a call form mum at work this afternoon to say thay the boys on the yard (she works at a builders merchants) had found a pigeon that had fishing wire tangled around his legs. They cut the wire off but he couldnt or wouldnt fly away and just wandered around for the rest of the day. It has rings on so when mum urd about it she asked me if i wanted it. I said yes and i would try to find its owner. I found the national pigeon association and there website said if the ring has GB on it its a racer and to contact the royal pigeon racing accoisasion. You can report stray birds on there website so i filled the form it and got to waite for them to call (says 2-3days). I took thim out the box and looked him over, they said one wing was floppy but its holding it up fine and it streches out fine and i cant see any cuts on its legs but they do look very red. I also checked inside its beak as i had a pigeonon the door step once and it had cancker and i know budgeis can get that so wanted to check this guy and all looked good. I did have a perch in the cage but he fell off it so ive taken it out, he has food and water and ive put him in my mouse shed (i breed fancy mice) so he should do fine in there, im thinking the quiet and dark will make him feel safe. Also he didnt seem bothered by me handling him at all so someone must have put some work into him, he didnt even seem bothered by my dog was thought the bird was a treat for her

funnerly enought i was talking about it to the breeder of my budgies the other month and he was saying if the bird is found far enough away from the owner they dont want to payout to go and get it so just say keep it. If they do ill ask them if there is a racer near here who may want him as i cant see it lasting long with my dog lol. Or he could live at work i supose they did say they wanted some diffrent types of birds lol

We used to get them occasionally resting on the roof of our house as a kid. We lived in the middle of nowhere and I think they just needed a break before continuing their race. There was never anything wrong with them, they were just tired, so would sit for a while and then fly off. They may have been blown off course too but we never did catch them. Hopefully you will find a solution for the bird PP. Good luck and good on you for being its saviour.

Last one we had stopping for a few days at the yard where I work had a phone number on his legring. The owner was very grateful to be contacted. He stayed for a few days and we fed him up on horse feed! and locked him in a stable at night so the cat wouldn't get him as he was really tired. We knew he was ready to go the evening we couldn't catch him to lock him in lol! Next morning he was gone:)

We had two once ^^ My grandparents had gone to Devon for my granddad's father's funeral and one of his old friends was a pigeon fancier and he said two had come to him but they were from Cardiff so he asked if we'd take them home with us and let them go. So we did and hopefully they found their way home ^^ They're supposed to be able to after all

ive been keeping him in my old hutch with food and water. I had another look at him today as one wing did look slightly lower then the other, one wing i can strech out all the way the other one he pulled in when i got it half streched one then when i put him back he sort of fell over. He seems able to walk around fine and is now moving away form me which he wasnt doing when i picked him up th eother day. Ive got him on trill mixed with chick crumb as i wasnt sure what her could eat. I though i would waite to see if the racing people call back befor trying to send him in his way incase i do and then get a call saying his owner wants to come and get him.

or do you think it would be better to see if he can fly? i just dont want to let him go and get a call saying to keep him here and his owner will pick him up. Will he still rember his way home if he has been here a few days? I might phone the racing people up if i dont get a call from them tomorrow.

you cant feed it trill ,,,, to help you...... iv found this .....
What if you find a lost pigeon. Water Most lost birds are hungry and thirsty. Water is necessary before all else. Since pigeons drink by suction, any water container should be at least 1 in. (2.5 cm) deep. An open container, i.e., a dish, an old margarine container tub, etc., is best. While a thirsty bird may drink immediately, it also may not. A bird that's gone without water for a while is sometimes so exhausted, it doesn't even realize that water is in front of it, especially if the water container you use is different from what it is familiar with. A trick I've often used is to trickle a few drops of water from on high into the container to make a splashing sound. When they hear that, most birds will invariably head to drink. If a bird looks really exhausted, Gatorade or other proprietary sports drink may be added to the water. A teaspoon or two per cup (250 ml) of water will help replenish electrolytes.
Food Pigeons are grain eaters. While park pigeons will eat bread, most domestic birds have been raised on a multi-grain mixture and have never seen a slice of it. In fact, they would likely ignore it as possible food. Try feeding them something else from around the house. Popcorn (maize), rice, white or brown, split peas, barley, buckwheat (kasha), canary seed, etc., are all good first options to feed a lost bird with. THESE GRAINS SHOULD NOT BE COOKED OR POPPED BUT FED RAW. Water should also be provided since pigeons normally drink immediately after eating.
What Should I Keep It In?
Any container that a dog or cat can't get into will be fine. An old bird cage will hold the pigeon for a day or so with no problem, as will a cardboard box - a screen on top of such a box is better than simply closing the flaps since there will then be enough light for the bird to see to eat and drink.
Finding the owner. If the bird has a band on its leg,you can sometimes trace its owner through one of the national pigeon organizations. However, this is often not even necessary. After twenty-four to forty-eight hours rest with food and water, most homing pigeons are more than capable of finding their way home on their own. If it looks very strong and active simply release it in an area free of wires or other obstacles and it will usually head home immediately. NEVER try to attach a note to the owner by rubber banding it to the bird's leg. This merely cuts off the leg's blood circulation and often leads to gangrene and amputation of the limb. If you do want to attach a small note, tie it carefully to the middle two tail feathers. Do not release non-homing pigeons, since most of those have little or no homing instinct and are probably out because a door was left open. If released, they will likely not make it.
What if it won't/can't go home?
Many birds can be traced to their owner by the numbered band (ring) on their leg. In North America, homing pigeons normally carry bands with a combination of the year plus the initials: Go to each site listed below and look for their Lost Bird or Band List.
