Hey all... Here's her story. She flew into our lives last year, right into our garage. She had poorly cut wings, couldn't fly well, and she was scared. We asked all our neighbors and no one claimed her, so we caught her and kept her, but she was the one keeping us! She kept us smiling, laughing, wondering, curious, entertained, happy and in awe of what a wonderful gift we had received. My son named her Cherry. We have never owned a bird before. We are dog people, although I have always wanted to own a bird since I am fond of them. So naturally, when the time was right, she came into our lives. I was the one taking care of her, since I stay at home. I ended up looking for information online and this is how I came across this site. We learned alot and we grew close to each other, especially since it took awhile to gain her trust. This past 6 months with her has given me a confidence boost in keeping budgies as pets now. She had become tame enough to keep outside the cage for hours and let her have the run of the family room. The confidence boost gave me such a comfortable complacency with her that I would leave her outside the cage when we would go in and out the door, with no problems. Well, 2 weeks ago, it was our #1 problem, since she decided to time her escape perfectly and as soon as the door was closing and I stepped through, she was gone just as fast as she flew in...except this time she could fly well enough to fly far away. ]= I live on the top of a hill, and seen her fly into a ravine, where I went looking, but to no avail. ]= I have been grieving over her the past couple weeks, but now think it is time to get a new companion. She really opened my eyes and heart to this new found love. Thank you, Cherry...You will always be loved. P.S I looked in the ID section, but if anyone can tell me what kind she was, I'd appreciate it! I think the 2 pics I provided is sufficient enough, but if ya'll need more, please let me know. Thank You, -Lani

Ah, sorry, Lani. The risk that is always with us regardless of how many times we go back and forth. Cherry was a beauty, and I hope you have success in finding another budgie to make your life complete again.

Hi Lani,
Your budgie Cherry was beautiful. I'm no expert at IDing them but I'm sure someone will come along and be able to tell you. You could always try and think of it in positive terms and that she flew into your life at a time when most needed, and she has moved on to provide that same love to someone else. It's a much more positive outlook than to think of what is out there.
Did you post any lost posters? Let the neighbourhood know Cherry is missing?

Cherry was beautiful. I hope she has found a new home as caring as yours was.
My beautiful boy flew to me as well from out of the blue as a baby. That was more than two years ago. I couldn't bear to lose him.

Have a search online, too Try parrotalert.com
Also type in 'lost yellow budgie', lost yellow parakeet, found yellow budgie' etc. and see what might come up.
Worth a go.

I'm so sorry you lost Cherry.
I do hope that someone has given her a home.
Don't give up hope. Put up posters, contact the local radio station, anything you can think of and also register her with Parrot Alert - the banner at the top of the forum and any other that you can think of.

Wow...we appreciate all the replies. It's great to know one isn't alone when losing their first one... No matter how they go. I really thank everyone for the support and understanding. Stace, I did post flyers around our neighborhood and even had the courage to go to 5 different houses in the area and leave my name and number just in case they seen or heard anything, but nothing. ]= It's been 2 weeks now and I can only hope she flew into someone else's lives, instead into the stomach of one of our resident hawks. Yet, I accept the reality and responsibility of the situation. I definitely learned a lesson. Put in cage when opening doors to the outside! [= My son is finally coming around to another one since he loved her so too. My only problem is I haven't found a bird breeder in my area. There are too many petsmart's/petco's, and I've read not to support these big chains, yet the only birdstore nearest me is 30 miles away. I went there today and was slightly disappointed in their few budgie selections since most were not, in my opinion, healthy looking. ]= ( I did mention I have been reading here for awhile right?) So on the way back, I stopped at a few big chain stores, since they are on every corner it seems like, just to look at the budgies there. 3/4 were just like the birdstore, it made my hopes drop. 1 did, however, surprise me. IT was the only one that did not clip their wings, kept them in the main aviary showcase, not the small glass box, and had healthy looking budgies. I gotta tell ya'...it made me smile. Maybe there is hope! I'm debating about the decision the next couple days, since I've read about impulse buys. I'm keeping my eyes open in the papers and doing research online just trying to find a Breeder in the area maybe that I could support instead, but they all point towards retirement or the birdstore 30 miles away... Oh yeah, thanks stace for recommending the banner for Parrot Alert! I will definitely try it before I do purchase our next one.

So sorry to hear your story Lani, as you said - it is always very sad losing your first one (no matter how). However, getting a new one will happen when the time is right and you will just know it Welcome to the forum and please let us know how you are and your findings of another little friend

Firstly, let me say Good on you for looking for someone who doesn't clip wings! I know it is very much an accepted thing in the US, but to my mind so unnecessary. Some people will say well if its wings were clipped it wouldn't have flown off. Not true. Cherry probably would still have escaped and been more susceptible to being eaten by a cat or hawk than finding a new home somewhere. I get very cranky with my OH sometimes for not thinking of the birds when leaving doors a little open while just "popping out and back in again". I know how tiny a gap they can sneak through. If he ever let a bird escape, I don't think I could forgive him! Same with ceiling fans - a constant in our lives, but think before you turn on!!!!! They are forever in my thoughts, I cannot understand how they aren't in the rest of the family's. My little rant, sorry! I know how easily they can escape. I have always encouraged my birds to wait until they are invited out of their cages, rather than just opening the door and free for all! Mostly it works. They are birds, after all!

Friends of mine have a very tame bird that flies around their garden and sits on the back of a patio chair basking in the sun. I couldn't quite believe it when I saw it. I on the other hand remember losing our bird as a child when my mum forgot that the window was open slightly. I was 8 and it broke my heart. it was the middle of a very cold winter. I don't know what I would do if it ever happened now but I am super cautious. So sorry that you lost your new friend. hope she has gone on to brighten someone else's life and good luck with finding another budgie
