Its not something that is often discussed on budgerigar forums ;D but my Alfie has been scratching his butt like mad with his feet. He looks really odd doing it but I am worried that he may have worms. I have picked him up and checked his vent because I was originally worried that he may be a bit bunged up or have poop sticking to his feathers but its all clear so its not that. I have Ivermectin but can't remember off the top of my head if that is treatment for worms as well as mites. Help?

The sign is very much like worms. But it can be something else as well. Put some petroleum jelly around the vent. If it is some skin issue, Alfie will stop scratching. If he still does that than it is something else. It has to be very thin otherwise Alfie will try to remove it and it will look like scratching. Ivermectin is for mites and not for worms. I use this for worms. www.vetcaremegastore.com.au/images/productimages/Avitrol-plus-wormer-(for-birds)-25-mL.jpg

most petshops sell a worming treatment that you put in the waters, birds should be wormed twice a year. look in the droppings if we suspect worms we take sample and look at the dropping from the bird under a microscope.
Some say garlic powder in the softfood is a natural de wormer but i hate the smell of it. so i dont use it.

Another good prophylactic for worms is regular helpings of eucalyptus, apparently. Eucalyptus oil is very strong and kills lots of things in concentration. In fact many gardens where eucalypts have grown won't grow well because of the residual oil in the ground. Do you have some readily available? I give mine some either once, twice or three times weekly, but also worm them twice a year as well . Could probably save myself some money!
