Today i checked the nest. There was one chick about 14 days old with little feathers and 4 eggs.Should i remove the 4 un hatched eggs or are they laid again? Here we use earthern pots and i could not check it frequently as they are attached at the top of the cage.

Hi I would get rid of them. Why use pots can't you get or make nest boxes?....B.J.

What dates were they laid, what dates should they have hatched? You should be keeping a record of all of this so you can know if they should have hatched yet or not. I have breeding cards attached to my nestboxes

I know Khkhan that such parts are popular in this part of the world but these are not recommended, because one cannot check on the chicks and eggs A simple daily check-up can save chicks lives which is not possible in those pots, Any unhatched eggs should be removed after 20 t0 22 days once the hen started the incubation. Anymore than that and eggs will cause bacteria in the nest box which can lead to chicks death.

Please can someone clarify the colour of fertile eggs? I've read lots of different reports on this with some saying the pinkish eggs are newly laid and others that they are infertile. My hen has finished laying 9 eggs 2 days ago. I was nervous to touch the eggs and didn't number them but the first one should hatch by tomorrow. Four of the eggs are a slight pinkish colour and I'm not sure if they are the last to be laid or if they are infertile. The other eggs are quite shiny white

In general, fertile eggs are stark white whereas non fertile eggs have pinkish tinge, but it's very difficult to judge eggs fertility just by looking at their color.

Traditionally we have been using these posts. Now i am switching to nest boxes. What is the ideal size of a box? Secondly....the Hen is not going into the pot once i removed to check it.I have installed it back but her visits have been reduced.Should i get the chick out of it and hand raise it?Its only 14 days and dont know how to handle it

Glad that you decided to switch to nest boxes The size of my nest boxes is 10x10x10. I find it better for hot weather here. A little smaller would be ideal for cold weather countries. Foster the chick to another pair or hand feed it.
