Hi all first post here, I have been reading and researching about budgies for a few weeks now and am ready to dip my toes in the water. I had a large cage in the loft for quite a few years and have just scrubbed disinfected jet blasted to within an inch of it's life with the intention of housing a pair of budgies. My concern is its a tall cage and I know budgies prefer long and aren't helicopters but my pocket tells me it will do the job. It's 22"w x 18"deep x 48" high what are your opinions on going ahead? Be brutal if you think it's inappropriate.

i'm also new to budgies and got my cage with the budgies ( their owner was posted to germany). My cage is tall, not as tall as this one and they don't seem to mind but then they are not in it much as they get to fly around the conservatory all day. Been told they are spoiled! hope fully someonemore experienced will help you out. The cage looks pretty cool from an asthetic point of view though.

Thanks for the reply, the cage looks bare as I binned the plastic perches but am making wood perches and toys currently after days of baking and sterilising it all, house smells like a forest.
Hopefully post a photo or two tomorrow with progress.

Hi, yes the cage has been in the loft for 5 years i think but havent seen any rust whilst disinfecting and jetting it, there is a bell toy which is stainless steel as is the dinger :-/is it called a dinger?? I have no fruit wood in my garden so have some Catoneaster that I'm making into perches, it's more a shrub than tree but is in the rose family which is listed as safe...if anyone knows different please advise. I'm making toys from Buddlia (butterfly bush) and cork bark, tied up with natural Jute rope that are all listed bird safe. Regards

Hi, Bill. As long as your budgies have plenty of outside the cage flying time, that cage you have should suffice. If they are going to be confined for most of the day (say if you are out to work and there isn't anyone home) then use that for the time being, but save your pennies and look to getting a more suitable one down the track, as this one won't allow them to fit in a fly from side to side. As for the bell (it is called a clapper , if it is stainless steel and hasn't any rust at all, and isn't too big, it should be right to go too. The bit there to really check on is the little o-ring that holds the clapper to the rest of the bell. Sometimes these aren't S/S and will show rust earlier than the rest of the bell.

As you said, an ideal cage should be wide and not tall but none the less this cage is beautiful Reducing a few perches will give them more flying space.

Thanks for the comments, i have moved food station to right as suggested and taken out 1 perch and moved 2 others apart for more wing room. Been to petshop and got a iodine block and cuttle fish bone, I was surprised at how small they were? What size cuttle bone is standard in budgie cage as the one i bought is 4"with iodine block being 2". Should I put the iodine or the cuttlefish in any particlar spot i/e near the water or food? Sorry for so many questions, i don't want to get birds then have to disturb them before they settled down.
